Hi,
The first thing you need to check is the air filter. Sometimes critters can get into the airbox when a bike sits for awhile. Sounds crazy, but it has happened to me. If nothing is blocking the filter, give it a quick clean since you have it out.
Next things to check:
Faulty diaphragm
Improperly adjusted fuel level
Clogged or loose main jet
Faulty fuel pump
You may not be able to check these on your own, but these are the next likely culprits.
Hope this helped

SOURCE: where is the oil filter on my yamaha V-star 1100

On the right side of the bike (right side when ou are sitting on it) just above the rear brake lever behind a small circular plate. remove the plate and the oil filter is inside (you will easily see it). Warning---on these bikes you have to drop the front exhaust header and right floor board in order to change the oil filter unless you install a after market oil filter relocation kit. If you plan on changing your own oil it is highly recommended to install this relocation kit.

My 2007 Model Yamaha VStar XVS 1100 starter motor whines after I changed Batery. Not engaging with starter clutch. It has never given problems until I installed new battery. Started perfectly after new battery put in and then the very next morning when I started it it the starter motor just whined and did not engage with starter clutch. I rocked the bike in gear, put back into neutral and it started. When the bike is warm its not so severe. The started clutch kit is a huge expense, surely I dont need all those parts because when after rocking the bike in gear I just tap on switch and she starts. Cant afford to fix her and the motor mac says starter clutch will wear but I have to attend a Rally this coming weekend and would like to know if there is any other tip or precaution or something else I need to know/do to assist in getting the starter clutch to engage with starter motor and not whine. Prehaps start in first with clutch in? It does jump forward slightly when I do this. Any tips welcome. I bought the bike 5 months ago ex owner didnt really service her and i can see her oil is dirty. Shall I drain the iol and put new oil in, do you think that this may help the starter clutch in any way? looking for any feed back that my help me not to get stuck on the way to or from the weekend rally. I started by having a 2nd ignition key made so I don't have to switch off the bike unnecessarily when doing a short refuel. Please assist if you can. Thank you Charlene
