Hi Paige, Seems like the problem is where the float and needle meet, The needle and seat let the gas into the bottom of the carby and as the gas rises the float rises as well pushing the needle up into the seat slowing the gas flow into the bottom of the carby.... As the motor's using the gas in the bottom of the carby the float's lowering and the needle lowers as well allowing gas into the carby, If the part of the float that meets the needle is bent down slightly it's going to let more gas into the bottom of the carb because it's not pushing the needle up when it should, YOU NEED TO BEND THAT PART OF THE FLOAT UP SLIGHTLY TO STOP THE GAS COMING OUT THE OVERFLOW.... #1 sounds like a fuel delivery system issue. Make sure the fuel tank flows freely to the carb. (remove the fuel line from the carb--from the gas tank and turn on the petcock--gas should flow freely) The needle and seat may need to be cleaned or replaced, this controls the flow of gas into the float bowl of the carb.(remove the drain screw from the bottom of the carb (with everything properly assembled- petcock on)..gas should continually flow through the bottom of the carb --10-15 seconds of continual gas flow will make sure its flowing properly! Both of these sound like a solution to your problem.
Remove old gas. Remove carb bowl and clean. Ensure float is working, float down gas flow. Float up no gas flow. Use a bread wrap, clean off 1 1/2 in to expose wire. Insert wire in tube from bottom of carb up to behind choke flap. Ensure needle valve moves smoothly when float is moved up & down. Remove plug, should be wet if gas is getting to cylinder. Ensure air filter is clean. Ensure oil has been changed and filled properly. Ensure primer bulb isn't cracked. Pull recoil rope twice half way to prime carb then pull all the way.
Pinch the fuel line then take the carb bowl off then reopen the gas line and press the floats upward and see for yourself if they are shutting off the flow.
Ensure fresh gas is in tank. Follow gas line from tank to carb. Have locking pliers ready to pinch off gas line or close gas line valve. Remove gas line from carb. observe gas flow to carb. Remove carb bowl from bottom of carb. Attach gas line to carb. Does gas flow to carb. Observe float, float down gas flows, float up no gas flow. If float is bad replace float assembly or carb. Remove float mounting pin and needle metering valve. Use a bread wrapper pealed back an inch so thin wire can clean out port of meter needle. Use wire to clean out center port. Observe bowl screw look for hole thru screw, clean out with wire if preset. Re-assemble carb. Clean replace air filter. Fill oil. 30w. Prime motor, pull rope 10 times to start. No start, replace carb.
Remove spark plug, clean or replace. Remove air cleaner, clean or replace. Ensure oil is full. 30w. Drain old gas out of tank. Fill with fresh gas with Stabile added. Remove bowl from bottom of carb. clean. Observe bowl screw, see if hole goes thru screw. Clean out. Bread wrapper works nice. Observe float. Float down gas flow, float up no gas flow. Re-assemble, prime 3 times, pull rope 10 times to start. No start replace carb.
Sounds like your carburetor floats are stuck to the bottom of the bowls. You can try to tap the carb bowl with a screwdriver and try to get them to pop loose, otherwise you will have to remove the float bowl (usually about 4 screws on the bottom of the carb). All you should have to do is pull it down about 1/4" or so until the floats pop loose and then put the bowl back on. This is pretty common on bikes that have sat for a few months, especially if you are good about draining the gas from the carbs when you're storring it.
i would also check fuel flow. pull the gas line from the carb and see if gas flows out at a good rate (into a metal can of course) or if it trickles out. if the latter, then gas tank either has junk at the bottom preventing the gas from flowing or the vent hole (usually on the gas cap) is plugged.
i have also had my carb float bowl rust out on me, but that took 10 years.
