My 84 Honda Nighthawk had the same problem. Turns out the clutch fluid return port was plugged. It's a small pinhole in the master cylinder that bleeds pressure back to the reservoir when the clutch lever is released. Otherwise pressure builds up in the system and keeps the clutch disengaged. It's easy to check, just pump the clutch lever a dozen times and open the air bleed plug (on the slave cylinder on my bike) there should be no pressure. If fluid squirts out under pressure, this is most likely the problem.

Hello Timbr. Thanks for this comment. I just fixed the clutch in my 1986 Cavalcade by cleaning out the small pinhole in the master cylinder as you described. Note that when the port is clean, fluid will squirt up like a fountain when the lever is pulled, if it is plugged, there will be no fluid flow from the pressure bleed hole back to the reservoir.

Did you replace the clutch springs with the original ones? or with Barnett ones? the latter are much stronger and will not slip, unlike the original ones. Barnett ones are available from www.cademaster.com under cavalcade parts.

SOURCE: the clutch started slipping. is

Ah yes! The missing clue! You put more stuff in the gearbox. But what exactly did you put in it? Motorcycle engines do not do well using synthetic oil, or oils with "special" additives or "friction reducers". Drain whatever is in the gearbox and refill with 10w40 motor oil. Shell, Mobil, Quaker State. Any major brand will do. It may require a one hour ride and a second oil change to rid the gearbox of the synthetic. Clutch plates that swell are usually toast. Plates that just slip usually recover after awhile. Install a new oil filter. Look it up in the manual. See below.

I want to know how to tell if i need a new clutch as compared to a slave cylinder, car has only 99k, and i bought it as is, owner said it needs slave cylinder, how can i be sure????

Put the car in first and start it up. If the car want's to lurch forward then the clutch is working but not disengaging. Look toward the slave/master cylinders or even the pedal itself. Pontiac used aluminum clutch pedals and they bend over time, hitting the floor before giving you the full length of travel. This causes the clutch to not disengage. 50 bucks at Fierostore.com.

If the car doesn't lurch or the RPM's go up while in gear and clutch out, but the car doesn't go any faster then the clutch is slipping and needs to be replaced.

Good luck,

Clutch pedal soft in morning but get hard to more it's used. This continues to the point the clutch feels like it's going to start slipping. New clutch just 500 miles ago.

hi it sounds like the clutch slave cylinder is starting to play up i would try replacing that first as they are not expensive and from memory are located on the passengers side of the gearbox which isnt too bad to get to, the only other thing that springs to mind would be an incorrect clutch plate for that model but i would highly doubt it if it was done by a pro hope this helps

How do I bled the clutch on a 1996 saturn sl?

The clutch is not blead-able. If it is leaking or runs out of fluid it must be replaced as a pre-bled clutch master/slave assembly.

Installed slave cylinder on truck ,I blead the clinder of all the air and got all fluid but I still do not have clutch, help me please

these are hard to bleed. sometimes its better to open the bleeder from the slave and pump fluid through the bleeder back up to the master. if the peadl doenst feel like its pushing the clutch, there is still air in it. pump the pedal rapidly 20 times, let it set 1 minute, now pump it again 20 times let it set, now hold it too floor and open bleeder, when fluid stops coming out close bleeder and let pedal up slowly. if still spongy, do the whole procedure again. it may take a while.

Clutch problem - battel to get gear lever in to gear

Well cindy for what i read from your question it just sounds to me to be the slave cyl. or master cyl. i got to admit i don't know exzactly what your set up is, but most have a resavor under hood with a line running down to a slave cyl. witch in turn pushes clutch to disengage clutch, now that slave cyl. can bleed off with very little sign of leakage, and from my experance from other cars and trucks thats where the problem lies is in the slave cyl. or what you understand is master cyl.

1991 jeep wrangler sahara shifting promblems

Your clutch is not disengaging. If it a hydrolic clutch chk. the fluid in resavor, Or slave cyl. for the clutch is bad, Or it has got air in it and needs to be bleed. This is a clutch problem, nothing wrong with trans. If its a manual clutch linkage its an ajustment thing. My best guess if its hydrolic slave cyl. went bad, or resavor is out of fluid.
