I got a buddie with an 86 suzuki LS650 savage. he is saying the repair manual is telling hin to ground the altenator to a groove and that the rocker arms should have free play. but her isnt getting...

The motor must be on TDC when checking valve clearance.
The motor must also be cold, not warm or hot.

IF you don't know where TDC is then pull off the cap so you can see the rotor/flywheel turning and it has marks on it. turn it until you see the T mark is lined up. check clearance.
If no clearance turn the motor one complete revolution until you see the T mark is lined up again, now check the clearance. if you get clearance on TDC this is the compression stroke. this is where you want the motor when checking/adjusting the valves clearance.

If you don't get clearance on either mark, then it could be a bad timing chain, stuck valve.
You'd have to pull the rocker cover off and inspect the timing chain.
To inspect for a stuck valve, watch the valves as you turn the motor over, and see if they are moving at all.(inspect that they are moving throught the cap you removed to check adjustment).

As for the alternator, you can ground it anywhere on the frame or motor, because the frame/motor is grounded to the battery.

Overhead valves making noise like they need ajusting

Valve Lash ADJUSTMENT 1.6L Engines NOTE: Measure valve clearance with the engine cold.
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2. Remove the valve cover.
  3. Set the engine to Top Dead Center (TDC) of the compression stroke for the cylinder to be adjusted.
  4. Check the valve clearance. The valve clearance specifications are as follows:
    • Intake valves: 0.005-0.007 inches (0.13-0.17mm)
    • Exhaust valves: 0.005-0.007 inches (0.13-0.17mm)
  5. After adjustment, tighten the locknuts to 11-14 ft. lbs. (15-19 Nm).
  6. Repeat for each valve to be adjusted.
1.8L, 2.0L and 2.5L Engines The 1.8L, 2.0L and 2.5L engines utilize automatic hydraulic lash adjusters to maintain proper valve lash at all times. Periodic valve lash inspection and adjustment is not necessary or possible. prev.gif next.gif

it depends on how you ride the bike.. If you are constantly ridding it wide open you should check them more often.. but the usual time to check them would be around every ten or so hours.. if the bike dont want to start for you the valves are probally tight so check them

Glowing exhaust header yamaha wr250f

It won't be valve timing or clearance. The fuel/air mix would be the culprit. Clean the carburetor with special attention to the idle circuit. Remount the carb with new manifold gaskets. A manifold air leak will mess up the mixture. Also, get a new spark plug one heat range colder than stock. Hope this helps out!

Please rate this solution. Thanks!
