This used to be a common problem back in the days of generators but I've not heard of this since Harley went to the alternator systems in 1970. It is unusual to say the least.

The first thing I'd do is have my battery tested. This is simply good procedure anytime you are experiencing a charging system problem.

Next, check the output of your alternator. To do this, you'll need a DVOM, digital volt ohm meter. Unplug the voltage regular at the front of your engine case close to the oil filter. Now, put your DVOM into "Voltage", "AC", Range 50 volts or better. Now, with the engine running, put one lead from the meter to one of the pins in the plug in the engine case. Put the other lead in the other pin. Rev the engine up to about 2000-2500 RPM. You should read at least 30 Volts AC. You must have the meter in the AC positon because an alternator puts out alternating current. Your regulator converts it to Direct Current voltage for the charging the battery and reduces the voltage. If you are reading thirty volts or better, I would suspect the Voltage Regulator is your problem.

Heating up, shuts off, Shutting off going about an 1 hour trip. hearing small noise in front of engine. Seams to be running hot. service techs put it on dyna but no results. Shut off again next trip. ran...

Had a simuliar problem, Bike would have a total shutdown a High Temps/Low Speeds/High RPMs. Everything would reset itself after appox 2 minutes. Everything would shutdown Electric and engine.
2 Harley dealers spent 75 hours diagnosing it, dealer could not reproduce it. Last repair was to replace battery cables. Seems to have fixed it. Have ridden 15oo miles since repair. Problem reacurred once last time I rode. Again complete shutdown bike restored after 2 minutes. Did not happen again the rest of the day over 200 miles

2006 Harley Davidson FXDLI Dyna Low Rider speedometer and tachometer not working @

Hi, Mneahr and the usual suspects are:
1. Contaminated or faulty speed sensor.
2. Faulty turn signal module.
3. Corroded, broken or loose connector pins/sockets in the wire harness between the speedometer and the ECM or TSSM and the sensor.
4. The speedometer unit has failed.
5. Speedometer instrument fuse has blown.

When i start the 06 harley fxdi it dies very shortly. i can keep it running with the throttle open or carb cleaner. If i let idle on its on, it will backfire than cut off, can anyone give me some...

If the bike is fuel injected (FXDI), you need to take it back to the dealer and have them take a look at it. There is no "user adjustable" settings on the bike.

The engine light comes back on for about five seconds after it is started and it cuts out at lower rpms occasionly

I'm going to guess that your alternator has to exceed a certain rpm to start charging. After you blip the throttle the low voltage signal goes away.
Cutting out is more than likely a mixture issue or a sensor fault.

Engine light, battery light and oil lights come on at low speeds and go off at high speeds. T

battery is getting low on charge, or you have a weak coil or the stator is weak.
Hope this was helpful
