Need to know how to adjust a carb on the 2.5L. I'm having a problem with too much gas getting into the chambers and drenching my spark plugs. I can also smell a lot of gas coming out of the exhaust. I had the carb rebuilt less than a year ago and I think it just needs a minor adjustment to cut back on the gas input. Thanks.

The air fuel adjustment has little to do with what u have going on, but here is what u do, make sure the engine is at normal operating temp temperature (at least 185F) then verify idle speed is set to spec +or- 50 RPM, then turn the carb mixture adjusment screw in until the idle speed starts to drop off, then turn it back out until the idle speed increases to its highest point (u will need a hand held tachometer), when u have reached the highest idle turn the idle screw back in 1/4 trun, that is lean best idle.

RX75 cuts for a short while and then shuts off and will not restart. I changed fuel filter and spark plug and it still doing the same problem.

You may have dirt in the carb. It floats around and after awhile gets caught in the small hole allowing gas to the combustion chamber. I would take the carb and clean it out.

Golfcart cranks but not starting.

Before doing anything, make sure that the timing and valves are properly adjusted. THEN, you need to check the ignition system and the fuel delivery systems for proper operation. You need spark and fuel delivery for that puppy to run. Did you check the ignition coil to make sure it is good? Are you getting a strong spark at the plug? Did you try starter fluid? Is new carb properly adjusted?

B&s 22hp engine won't start

Hi Charles:
I'd start by checking the spark plug condition and function.
Wet........... no spark
Dry............ no fuel
Check for spark anyway. Hot and blue.
Try priming carb with a squirt of gas.
Drain and flush carb. You may need to remove and thoroughly clean if gummed up.

1988 w/5.8. Why did it just quit firing?

Hi Torri:
- The first thing I would do would be pull a spark plug and check for a hot blue spark at the electrode (tip) of the plug.
If you have spark then you need fuel in the chamber to get some action, so.
- The next thing I'd check would be fuel delivery. Different process for carb and fuel injection, but a squirt of gas into the intake should make it burp.

Once you've isolated the problem we can help with more ideas for a solution.
Cheerfuls.

5L engine. Why won't it start?

check that the fuel is getting to the engine and the spark is presentm if it is a gas/petrol engine that is. The spark and fuel must be introduced into the combustion chamber simultaneously for an engine to work.
If one is present without the other the engine cannot work.So check that the fuel is getting there by slightly loosening one of the plugs and turning over for a good while ...then quickly remove the spark plug and check to see whether the end of the plug is moist with fuel. If it is not quickly sniff the spark plug hole checking for the smeell of gas/ petrol... if you can smell it the n that is one possible cause discounted.
Then push the removed plug into the wire associated with it and place the tip close to a metal section of the engine.....do not hold it .....
With somebody cranking the engine over observe the spark produced...if a spark is produced make note of whether it is a healthy, visible spark... If it is that may be another cause discounted.
If the spark is ok and the fuel is ok then you need to check the timing, that is you need to check that the two elements are introduced into the combustion chamber simultaneously
This can be done by a mechanic if you cannot check yourself. A mechanic may be able to make adjustments to the fuel supply and the spark to make them coincide thereby making the engine work.
If during the above process you find that no fuel is getting to the combustion chamber , or whether the injection of fuel is a weak one , you must seek to ascertain what the cause of the bad fuel supply is.
Maybe clogged fuel lines or fuel pipes impeding the flow.
Maybe a weak fuel pump not delivering enough pressure.
A malfunction of any of the sensors associated with the fuel system that lead to no or bad fuel delivery. These include the crank position sensor, the cam position sensor, the throttle position sensor , the electronic control unit, the sensors attached to it, etc.

If the spark is found to be weak you should try changing plug wirres/cables
If that has little effect check the distributor cap/rotor arm for condition.
If that is okay check the coil or coil packs.

Remember that these are only some of the potential causes of non working engines,

I have a 22re toyota pick up with weber carburetor it takes a long time to start in the mornings battery even dies sometimes before starting what do you recomend

Check that your choke is working properly.
Start with a tune-up, new gas filter, air filter if dirty, oil and oil filter, spark plugs, distributor cap and rotor. If your spark plug wires are old, buy a new set, or test yours with an ohmmeter.
If still bad, check if your fuel pump is putting enough gas into the carburetor. Take the gas line off at carb. and check volume flow into a container. Also the carb may need adjustments-maybe the fuel level in carb. bowl is too low-would need to raise float height. Check if the needle valve and seat at the gas inlet to carb is not clogged or stopped from trash or debris.
Look down the throat of carb and watch for gas jetting out when you open the throttle to wide open-you should see gas spurt downward, if not, the carb needs some work to it.
Is your choke adjusted right? Sounds like it may not be-the choke flap should be nearly closed when starting, partially open after running, and fully open after the engine warms up.
Other problems could be weak ignition components-possibly a coil or igniter-what Toyota calls an ignition module.
Post back with what you find. Webers are great carburetors-much better than stock.

My spark plugs are covered in oil ,on my astra vxr,any ideas please?

If indeed all your plugs are drenched in oil when removed, it could be one of two things: Your piston oil rings have failed and oil is leaking heavily past them into the combustion chamber where your plugs are located, or you have a crack in the engine block and oil is escaping through it into all the cylinders. Either the piston rings need to be replaced, or, if it's the crack in the block, the engine must be replaced or overhauled. It's doubtful that all the piston rings would fail at the same time unless you never changed oil or ran the car with low oil.

I changed my distributor cap, coil and rotor. but i forgot to connect the ignition back to the distributor. i tried starting my car but obivously it did not work. I thought it wasnt getting any gas so i...

Continuing to crank the engine, without touching the accelerator pedal should "unflood" the engine. Remember that what floods is the combustion chamber, where the spark plugs are, not the carb itself. If the flooding was really severe, maybe the plugs are unable to make sparks. Take out the plugs, leave them out for an hour (to allow gasoline to evaporate out of the cylinder chambers) and put fresh plugs in. Good luck.

Spark plug drenched in motor oil

If it is oil, the oil is leaking into the cyliinder past the piston ring. You need to have this checked by a mechanic orherwise you will have a more expensive problem.

Truck wont shut off when i turn key off and is idling high aslo

You seem to be describing a VERY lean gas mixture.
The spark plugs get VERY hot - so they do not need the power from the key to keep running... they fire gas until the fuel pump gas dries up (or the carb float bowl) - AKA dieseling.

Lean mixtures idle high - and can burn valves.
So, it is carb or FI? IF carb - something is reducing the flow of gas through the jets. Fuel pressure, dirt, clogged fuel filter.

Best/cheapest 1st shot at fixing this would be to spray carb cleaner in the carb with the engine running.
Second, add fuel line cleaner/gas additive to the gas tank.
If you see no improvement after driving 20 to 30 miles, then it is time to take it in to a shop and have the timing checked (advanced timing will lean out the combustion chamber mixture). Then fuel pressure test and finally, filter replacement.

Almost certainly one of the above will improve/cure the problem.
