Yes they sell links for that at the saw shop. You file the head off two rivets in the chain to remove however many links you need then install the connecting link. If you're not sure how many to remove, take out one at a time putting the connecting link in without bradding the rivets. Put it back on the saw and see if its still too long. When the length is right you brad the end of the rivets that come with the new link.

You realize the chain spins at a very fast rate mere inches from your joint! We are not responsible for joint damage if the chain separates at speed. Take your saw and chain to a local saw shop and ask them to demonstrate the correct method to shorten your chain.

If you have more questions or need additional help please reply below and I will get back to you. Thank you for using FixYa and Good Luck. HTH

When I use my chainsaw the chain alway's comes flying off - please advise

not know what kind of chainsaw a fix maybe hard to do but here goes
1. be sure chain is right size for bar as in bar groove for chain right size, sprocket gear right size and chain right length for bar.
2. be sure bar is adjusted for length of chain and tighten bolts to hold bar in place
3. always have sharp chain teeth
be careful if still happening -- may be better to buy new saw

How to replace chain on chain saw?

you have to loosen your bar nuts. then there is a chain tentioner screw either on the front of the saw or on the side between the bar nuts. turn this screw until the chain is drooping fron bottom of bar. remove the bar nuts, cover, then the bar and chain. make sure the the cutters on the new chain face forward when installed. tighten tensioner screw until chain is snug against bar then replace cover and bar nuts. readjust chain if it is loose. lift unit from handle forcing tip of bar up. this takes away any chance of play in the bar.tighten bar nuts when satisfied that chain is tight. when properly installed you should be able to pull chain upward fron bar and the drive links should not come over the rail guide.

How to change a chain

First of all, make sure the saw is off. Also, before removing bolts, make sure the chain brake is not engaged (the chain should move freely).
Remove the guide bar side panel. Using a scwrench or wrench, unscrew the nuts and remove the plate to access the chain.

The side plate on most chainsaws will be held on by two nuts. Loosen the blade adjustment screw (a pin that is usually driven by a screw and pushes the blade out from the chainsaw to keep the chain tension tight).

The old chain is ready to be removed now that the sprocket plate is off of the saw. Pull the nose of the chainsaw's bar away from the chainsaw to release it from the tensioner.

Remove the old chainsaw chain.

The chain will easily remove from the guide bar with all that slack in it. Note the orientation of the cutting edges of the chain so you put the new one on the same way.

Pull the drive links out of the guide bar and slip the other end of the chain around the clutch drum.

Steps to Install a New Chainsaw Chain
Thread the new chain onto the saw.

Carefully thread your new or recently sharpened chainsaw chain around the chainsaw's clutch drum, making sure that the drive links engage in the sprocket.

Thread the rest of the drive links into the guide bar and around its nose, making sure all links are in the guide bar slot.
Align the guide bar.

With the chain properly threaded along the clutch drum and guide bar, put some tension into it by pulling on the nose of the guide bar away from the chainsaw.

While pulling the guide bar, make sure to seat it onto the saw's adjustment pin.

seatpin.jpg
Replace the side plate.

The side plate is ready to go back on as long as the guide bar is properly positioned beneath.

Replace the plate and the nuts that hold it into position, but do not tighten the nuts down all the way yet. The guide bar must be allowed to move a little while the chain is tightened to the correct tension.
Tighten the chain to the correct tension. Use the tensioning screw to the side of the guide bar to adjust the tension on the chainsaw chain.

Finish tightening the side plate nuts.

The chainsaw chain replacement is now complete.

And here is a great overall reference guide to keeping a chainsaw sharp and running. Sharpening a chainsaw chain is a great way to extend the life and is less expensive and easier than replacing a chain. There are small grinding tools (like a dremel) that can be run off a small 12v battery or your vehicle battery that allow for quick 'tune-ups' on your chain if you are out cutting and need to sharpen your chain.

Oil not feeding to the chain guide on the electric ryobi chain saw

Remove the cover on the right hand side of the saw and remove the bar and chain. Clean the oil port holes in the bar and the body of the saw. They get clogged with sawdust and chips. Also clean the groove in the bar and the sprocket at the end of the bar. Always use proper chainsaw bar oil.

I have a 358351610 chain saw and need to find out how to remove the chain

Set the chain brake to off, then remove the fasteners on the right side cover where the chain drives from. This will release the bar which will slide back toward the engine and allow the chain to be removed. Note the direction of the cutting edge of the teeth. Clean everything including the two small oil passages that run from the large holes in the bar out to the chain groove on each edge of the bar. When refitting a new chain, back off on the chain adjustment screw (CCW) a few turns to allow the cover to fit to the bar properly. Fit the chain over the clutch sprocket, then insert the bar to the engine. Work the chain over the bar, then pull the bar outward to tighten the chain. Install the cover and the fasteners finger tight. Make sure the cover fits the bar properly. Tighten the chain adjuster CW so that the chain pulls up to the lower bar edge, but not so tight that you can't turn the chain by hand. Tighten the cover fasteners, then recheck the chain tension. The lower run of chain should be cutting as the chain moves toward the engine. Check the chain oiling by running the saw at speed with the bar tip near some cardboard--it should throw off a thin line of oil after several moments. Hope this helps!

Can't seem to get my oiler to work properly. oil emerges when i run the saw with the bar removed, but chain is dry and hot when run put together.

Some saw manufactures design their oilers to only work with their bars. Are you running the mfg suggested or stock bar? Chain? Stihl Chain is designed to use 30% less oil because of oil groves cut into each drive link directed to the rivets. So if your running an aftermarket bar/chain, the oiling ports may not line up. Especially if it oils with no bar & chain

Wild thing chain saw chain came off

The drive links are burred.
512b519.jpg Use a file on the flats of the drive links to remove all burrs.
Then install and properly tension the chain
d8585be.gif
Chain Adjustment
  1. Make sure the chain brake is off (gloves will protest your fingers).
  2. If necessary, loosen the bar nuts that are clamping the clutch cover in place (or whatever holds the clutch cover and bar on). They do not need these really loose - finger tight will do.
  3. Ease the tension adjustment until the chain is obviously loose.
  4. Using one hand, hold the nose of the bar up.
  5. While holding the nose up, adjust the tensioner so that the center of the chain just touches the underside of the bar, add a touch more.
  6. Continue holding the nose of the bar up & tighten up the bar nuts / bolts / quick-release system. HTH

The chain on my Remington electric saw keeps jumping the sprocket. Solution? Thanks.

Depending to what model you have, the Sprocket cover tab (located on the round part of the sprocket cover) isn’t inserted into the saw body tab slot. Or your cahin is not tensioned properly. According to the manufacturer... "The adjusting block on the adjusting screw isn’t inserted into the adjusting hole on the guide bar. Reinstall and align the sprocket cover by first removing the sprocket cover from the saw. Turn tensioning screw on the sprocket cover counter-clockwise until it stops. Pull guide bar away from saw body to remove slack from chain. Insert sprocket cover tab into saw body tab slot and lower sprocket cover into guide bar bolt. Finger tighten guide bar nut onto guide bar bolt. Slowly push guide bar toward saw body until adjusting block on the adjusting screw drops into round adjusting hole on the guide bar. Securely tighten guide bar nut after properly tensioning saw chain." If these tips do not work, you may need a new chain. You can order an new chain on-line at www.masterparts.net. I hope this helps you!

Need to change chain

Go buy a chain that is the right size. As you are holding the saw on the left you will one or probably two nuts on a screw. Remove them and then remove the cover over the sprocket and chain. Remove the old chain and install a new one. Make sure the teeth are in the same direction as the old chain!!! Pull on the bar until the chain is tight. Reinstall the cover and tighten the nuts back up. You are good to go.
