Question about 1984 Honda VT 500 C Shadow
1983 honda shadow vt500c 68kmi V twin 500cc Runs very well on a fresh set of spark plugs, but fouls the set of 4 in 5 to700 miles. The engine is compleatly stock as far as I know, with the excption of the exaust. The origenal mufflers were trash, so I replaced them with a pair of 883 harley takeoffs. I have experimented using different sizes of pipe to baffel them from 1 1/8" in 1/8" incerments down to 1/2". Althow Preformance was impacted the pluge fowling was not. I changed plug brands with no change.
Check that the choke cable is functioning properly so chock is not staying slightly on or sticking choke would cause this also.
Too much backpressure from exhaust will also make it run rich.

If the plugs are fuel fouled then you should look at the carbs.sounds like running ritch. If carbs are OK then Check spark if it is orange it is week(should be whiteish blue). If the coils are producing spark but week the bike will run but eventualy foul the plugs because it can't burn all the fuel.

Are the harley takeoff's less restrictive than the honda? The jetting of the carbs will need to be changed to suit an exhaust system if it is much more or much less restrictive than the standard.
Might be worth trying a different plug heat rating.
