I have a quantum fireball lct20 40gb hard drive that I am attempting to install as a slave drive in a Dell Dimension 2400 desktop, and while it works in other computers, I keep getting the BIOS detection error screen. I read on another similar question on this site that two jumpers are required rather than just one. That question was for a 20gb model, and it also did not show what the configuration was. The manufacturer's site was unhelpful. Can you tell me what configuration to use please?

I'm trying to increase hard disk space on a Dell

Hi.

The Dell Inspiron 1100 is a laptop whereas the Dell Dimension 2400 is a desktop pc.

The hard drives are incompatible because they are a different size, plus the Inspiron only supports one hard drive so you can't install a slave device. The only way to increase hard disk space is to buy a large capacity internal IDE laptop drive or an external hard drive.

Regards.

What settings in the bios with maxtor as slve and quantom fireball as master

There are no settings in the BIOS for setting up master ans slave drives.
The hard drives have jumpers for configuring master and Slave drives.
If your hard drives are IDE/PATA hard drives and you intend to install these drives on the same IDE cable then you can set the jumper on Quantum drive as Master and the Maxtor on Slave.
I suggest that you install the Quantum as master on the 1st IDE cable and the Maxtor as Master on the 2nd IDE cable for maximum data transfer rate between the two hard drived.
Any other devices that are connected to these IDE cables will need to be jumpered as Slave devices.

Different WIndows operating systems on two hard drives

main Dell Optiplex

Slave (cable select)
Quantum Fireball
once you have installed them physically into your comptuer like that, start it up.

Format Quantum Fireball

Now you still have windows xp, and you have a clean 2nd hard drive.

You do not need to install windows xp on the 2nd drive
Quantum Fireball .

I need to dump the contents of a Quantum Fireball Plus LM onto my Dell Studio Desktop (Vista). Do I need to set the drive jumpers to make this an auxilary drive before booting up my Dell?

it just depends in what position you hook it up ...on the cable ...if you have a normal ata /ide master ...just get it like it is ...but if you will set in a slave position you have to set the pin for it in the same manner .....
the default for the master is in the first fromn the left ( near ata ) one jumper in ds position ...first from the left ...
FOR SLAVE : IS THE 3RD FROM THE LEFT ...IN THE PK POSITION SECOND NEAR THE POWER
but I understood that this position really do not have a working value and the setting can be plane no jumper at all for slave ..

Adding old hard disk. 20 GB Quantum Fireball Ict, in Dell 9200 PC

if it's old it's probably IDE also known as PATA. it looks like a wide ribbon. There should be a header on the motherboard that looks exactly like the plug on the back of the hard drive. It will be labeled IDE1 probably if you have it. Old motherboards used to have 2 IDE headers, modern ones have one or none. The ribbon will have three plugs--one for the mobo, and then two spaced closer together for the master and the slave. You need to hook it to the appropriate plug (master if it's the only device on the ribbon) and make sure the jumpers on the HD are set properly to make it self-identify as the master. Good luck!

I have a PC Dell Dimension 2400 with a hard 40 GB

Basically when you install a new boot drive you need to install Windows operating system on the new hard drive, also the device drivers (eg video, audio, modem, LAN etc), your programs and data. The reason programs has to be installed is because the installation process copied DLL files to the System folders and makes changes to the registry.
You can only copy your data onto the new hard disk.
To avoid copying your data to the new hard drive, you can set up the old hard drive as second hard drive (ie. slave drive), if you delete the redundant folders and leave only the data folders then you have an adddition 40Gb of disk space.

Quantum Fireball lct 30gig not recognized in Dell Dimension 3000

Turns out this particular drive needs TWO jumpers on it, to set it to CS. I received it used with a single jumper in the Master position, but after checking the Maxtor/Quantum website, it listed the jumper positions and showed the second jumper. As soon as I installed the TWO jumpers in the correct position, the Dimension 3000 booted right up and let me reinstall Windows. I had scoured the internet for many hours looking for a solution, none solved it until I decided to check the manufacturers website. Always start there!- Solved!
