1997 Yamaha YZF 1000 clutch and/or transmission problem?

Just bought my used '97 Ace. When cold, I start up the bike in neutral, pull the clutch in, and downshift into 1st gear (it cleanly shifts into 1st). I let out the clutch and give it gas and for some reason, 1st gear will not engage. In other words, while in first gear with the clutch completely released, the tranny doesn't engage and the bike doesn't move whether or not I give it gas; it just sits there idling as if I'm in neutral. If I let it warm up, the problem goes away and will take off without issue. I can't imagine this is normal. I have never experienced this with any other bikes I've owned. Any thoughts? Thanks!

Well this is something that is as you said " not normal" i would guess that clutch is smoked. after it warms up do a 3rd gear roll on at about 45 mph. if you drop the hammer and the motor revs and you don't go anywhere stop the ride and R&R your clutch
something else to make sure of is that you clutch fuild is good and has no air in the line
Good luck

97 YAMAHA YZF 1000,wont start itself after bike is warm

Have you checked the ground lead?

Make sure it is clean, it runs down and bolts to the top right hand side of the crank case.

Sometimes what happens is, that lead gets grime on it, oil or corrosion.. and it doesn't make good contact. The lights, spark ETC load the crank case and frame full of DC.. when you shut the bike off the dc cant flow through the starter so it won't turn over.

after a while the dc trickles out it will let the bike start again.

Hope thats it and it works for you, good luck!!

P.S. how is he liking his ace?? Awsome bike, I have had mine since 1999, and it not about to go anywhere!!
