It could be a number of things, and the first two solution both could be right. If it is a problem as outlined by neddz, and you live in Australia, try running the bike and putting Fuel Doctor in with your fuel. My CBX 550 regularly gums up as I need to add a lead additive to the fuel. To counteract the gumming, I put in Fuel Doctor with every tank and it works a treat. You will have to shock treat your first tank with almost half the bottle, but it will definately clean your jets and carbs. You can buy it at Supercheap Auto.

Hi,
I would check your ignitor. I have had a similar problem and I am now in contact with a company in Belgium - Horse Power Ignition who can either repair or replace the ignitor. Repair is 75 euros. Full replacement using your old box is 150 euros. Check out their website. They are very helpful. You will find that you have a Hitachi TID 14-09 ignitor. There are other repairers around. In Australia the average repair cost starts at $380 - $400. 150 euros is about $230 - for a brand new ignitor wired into your existing box. My ignitor was intermittent. Took a long time to track down the problem. It would start and be fine for a few days and then not start for a few days. Eventually it got to starting and then coughing and spluttering on anything but idle.. Hope this helps
Cheers Davydd

Hi,if the bike has been stood for a while,or played with by some one,the best thing you can do is strip the carbs and clean them,it sounds like a blocked main jet also check the fuel filter in the fuel tank(part of the fuel tap),stale fuel in the carbs will congeal and gum ,this deposit will block the main fuel stream through the carb, give the carbs a good clean up and your problem may go away...cheers

Cbx 550 fires on 3 cyclinders for about 2 seconds the dies, wont run for a period of time, i cleaned the carbs, also the bike had been sitting for about 4 years, any help would be great.

Clean fresh gas? Checked the spark? The spark plug wire ends should be replaceable. They usually just twist, or unscrew, from the wires. They can get corroded or just plain wear out just like a cars spark plug wires do.

1983 Honda CBX 550 backfires a lot and has no power

If the fuel is a year old, Replace all of it.Stabilizers are not restorers. Your backfiring may very well be due to the inconsistancy of the fuel. Try it and see if that gets you flying.. good luck
