If it ran fine for a month it's likely to be something else, and if it runs for a short while then it's likely to be fuel mixture. What colour are the spark plugs when you remove them?
Oily isn't a good sign
Wet with petrol or really black? It's over fuelling, not enough air getting in or timing is out.
Could they (spark plugs) be breaking down, have you tried simply changing them?
Is it smoking white (head gasket blown) or blue (oil seals or piston rings) from the exhaust?

slightly black spark plugs shouldn't be a problem nor a little white smoke whilst it's running cold, pale grey is best when it's cold, tells you its using more fuel as it should, but should be almost smokeless when warm. How cold is your environment? could the carbs be freezing? do you have a manual?
I am trying to find out what the carbs are like...no luck yet. Are there any leaks in the vacuum pipe to the fuel tank resulting in the carbs drying out? (and hence the short run period) Is this pipe dry and clean(it should be)?Are the diaphragms on the carbs ok? (if you rev it it will accelerate but die when you release the throttle) Are the float chambers clean?
Thanks Roynice152, I was reminded today the 954 were injection :O)

Was the bike running fine before you cleaned them? If your bike won't stay running, you might need to adjust your idle. There is a black round dial on the left side next to the stator (big round circular housing) turn it so the fuel is increased.
Testimonial: "thanks for your input. i've tried what you suggested. if theres anything else that you can think of besides changing the plugs i would appreciate it"
2001 was when fuel injection was introduced. So there are no carbs. Maybe you got some bad fuel... You could try putting some seafoam or stabil in the tank and see if that can keep it running.
If you can get it running, give it some gas to keep it running with your throttle. And let it warm up to about 125-130 and then let off the throttle and see if it will stay running without your hand on the gas.
If you could take a video of it, and then post it on facebook and post a link on here. That would really help us to analyze the problem.

yes it ran fine after adjusting the idle when i first got it. but the next time i tried it wouldnt start so i cleaned the plugs and it ran fine. but now it won't run but for a minute or so. i'm still tryin to adjust it but it wont run long enough.
the plugs were black which i am goin to change but i only started it up; not ride it; and let it run a month before i started having this problem. there is white smoke when i try starting it. but every other day it will start up and run for a minute or so. too much fuel is what i've been thinking but i cant get it adjusted cause i cant keep it running. i'll try changing the air filter. thanks. anything more will be appreciated
the enviroment isnt really that cold. it got cold for a couple of weeks but thats about it. right now its pretty warm.
...and no i dont have a manual
i've emptied my tank so that i can get it painted. im gona change the spark plugs so when i get the tank back i will see what it will do with new plugs and gas. ill post again once i get it all put back together. thanks again for the input so far.
