Zl 400 eliminator swings forever before it slowly starts. There's a continuous miss when running. The bike cannot idle and only rides a short distance before it cuts out. How would i know if there's a problem with my cylinder head gasket, or if it's the carbs?

Sounds like the carbs are needing cleaned and the intake boots need to be looked at for cracks.
If it was the head gasket it wouldn't run.

Kwasaki 400 eliminator wont start, cleaned out carbs, checked spark, tried most basic things. will start only if carb air filter is blocked up

YOU ARE CREATING A VACUUM BY BLOCKING OFF THE AIR INTAKE, IT IS SUCKING THE GAS OUT OF THE IDLE JET OR THE CHOKE. The low speed jet is either the wrong size or clogged up, You can try squirting in some carb cleaner as it is trying to run, or just take the thing apart again, and make sure the jets are clean, get a guitar string wire in there and blow through the hole. And before you do that, check the pump, make sure it is pumping fuel, not just sucking it in. Check it out.

Zl 600 1986 is hard starting

Ok, the correct proceedure for starting a cold engine is as follows, pull the choke fully on, and crank over the engine, DO NOT use the throttle when cranking the engine, when the bike fires and starts, slowly turn down the choke until a smooth fast idle achieved. The important thing to remember is, do not use the throttle while the choke is on, as this lets it **** in cold air, and makes for a harder start, remember the choke is there to restrict air flow, make a rich fuel mixture, for cold starting. If that does not work, then mabey u have a carby problem, make sure your choke is coming on.

Thinking of buying 1985 ZL900 eliminator...with 50K miles 1. saw light rust inside the tank. is this a big problem? how can I clean it out ? 2. bike starts up and runs fine. then, stalls after driven...

Rust in the tank not a big problem, there is a product called Kreem you can buy the kit comes with bottle of rust remover and bottle of dryer and a bottle of internal sealer/coating.

Zl900 eliminator starts and runs good. when i put it into gear (with the side stand up)the motor shuts down.

Hi
It sounds like the side-stand switch is not working - check for continuity across it & for any bad contacts or broken / crushed wiring also

Had trouble finding a sparkplug cap for my 86 zl-900. I put in a different cap, but it doesn't seal the sparkplug chamber and my bike has a hesitation when I hit the throttle? Also, how much oil do I need...

GPZ900 spark plug caps fit fine & are easier to get hold of, but get genuine!
3 litres with a filter change, 2.7 without

Hope this helps (if so please mark as helpful !!)

1986 zl 600 eliminator. Quits while driving.

I had a similar problem. Mine would continue running, but it felt like it dropped cylinders. Sputtered, backfires...etc. Check your ignitor box (under the seat, attached to the rear fender. Start the bike up to operating temp, and if it does the problem, the tech that fixed mine squeezed the ignitor box, and it returned to normal. Got a new one checking salvage yards online.

Engine miss after warmup. Cylinders drop out / missfire.

classic sympton of HT coil packing up. if you leave the bike to cool down is it ok again? have tested them cold in the past and fine, try putting them on a radiator in the house to get warm and test again. have known bikes that owner rides to work every day and it will break down in the same spot every day. electrics always more efficient when cold. with CDI units, when they go, they usually go....pop and that's it.
