If you have to choke it for it to run it is to lean. Figure out why, lean operation will cause P&C failure.
It sounds like there is a fuel delivery problem. Check the fuel filter on the free end of a hose in fuel tank (manufacturer recommends an annual replacement). Check all fuel delivery lines especially at fittings and bends for cracks and holes.
If all hoses and carburetor boot and is good and the carburetor isn't loose adjust the carburetor, start at 1.5 CCW from lightly seated. All adjustments are to be made using a fresh (3 months or less) fuel mix at a 50:1 ratio, at the elevation where it will be used, and a clean air filter. HTH

Replace in-tank fuel filter (should do that before the carb if it runs at all)

I have a poulan wild thing and it will start just fine, but it only runs about 1 to 2 minutes and then it won't stay running. Does anybody know what it might be or what i can check. Thank you Fred

Could be the fuel pump in the carb.Should be a small rubber hose going from the carb to the crank case the simple fix would be if it is cracked. That would be a good simple start.

My Poulan 18in 40 cc WildThing ChainSaw Won't Start.

Start with basic tests, drain the fuel tank and fill with fresh fuel oil mix, remove and reolace the fuel filter on the edn of the fuel hose, check the fuel hose up to the carb for leaks, remove the spark plug, rest it on the side of the cylinder ( away from the plug hole ) cramk the engine and check if you have a spark.

My poulan wild thing will start but will not stay running without holding the throttle. What should I do?

Get some sta-bil fuel stabilizer. add twice the amount recommended on the bottle for storage to your mixed gas. Empty out chainsaw tank and refill with the new mix. Rub for 2 minutes, then shut off. Remove cover over carb and spray inside carb, soaking it down good and cleaning all internal surfaces visible - allow to sit overnight.
Next day
Spray down carb with carb cleaner for about 15 seconds. Start saw, allowing 2 minutes to warm up and reduce choke. If saw stalls, restart and spray inside carb as it runs with choke on - keep motor at the highest rpms you can as you spray - spray in 2 second bursts, not allowing motor to stall from spray. If it stalls, change sparkplug and try again. You have varnish build up in the carb and are trying to remove it so the carb will work without the choke. This may take some time but it is the exact procedure I used for my Poulan Team Realtree last spring - I spent about an hour spraying and staring before it ran without the choke.
Good luck!!

Runs about 15 min. then quits and will not start for 20 mins.

Change the spark plug, clean fuel lines, filter and tank.

Poulan Wild Thing 18" Gas chain saw starts no problem but it runs for maybe 30 sec. then stops each time. I changed the core same thing.

Do a tune up. It is easy. Just take out the carb and clean with any commercial carb cleaner nad change the spark plug.

Poulan Wild Thing will not restart after 15 min.

Try venting the gas cap for a moment and attempt restart. If it starts, check for a plugged tank vent which should be a bronze disk set into the tank casting and located above the filler cap under the left side cover. When you changed the plug, was it wet with fuel inside? Also, check for spark at the plug when it won't start. You may have ignition problems that occur with engine heat. Hope some of this helps!

17hp b/s intek OHV after 30 min mowing starts running rough

if gas is in the oil the needle and seat in the carb are bad or some thing in it. the gas will go in to the crank case and load the cylinder with gas. you can take the carb apart to see if something is in the seat. or replace the carb
