Remove #1 spark plug, turn engine to TDC #1 on compression stroke (you can tell this several ways--put plug in loose and listen for compression escaping, use compression gauge, stick finger in hole to feel pressure (not recommended cause as engine goes past TDC may suck finger into hole), or examine valves if cover is off-you should have intake closed and exhaust closed). There should also be marks on the crank pulley, but the TDC mark can be showing TDC on compression stroke or 360 degrees off on exhaust stoke. If this doesn't help, google search 4 stroke engine cycles.

18.5 hp lawn tractor will not turn over when on compression stroke . If you move it a little by hand past compression stroke it will start.


Sounds to me that you have a weak battery and is not putting out enough cranking amps..Takes more cranking amps during compression strokes to start than in down stroke...That is why you are able to start it in the down stroke less amps needed to turn motor over..

How to insall distributer on 1966 ford mustang


Okay, you have to set the number 1 cylinder at TDC of its
compression stroke, and then drop in the distributor so the rotor is pointing to the #1 spark plug wire tower. This should start the car, then you could set the timing to spec with a timing light.

There are two TDC's of a cylinder- the compression stroke and the exhaust stroke. To find the compression stroke, take out the #1 cylinder spark plug. Put your finger over the hole. Now either turn the engine over by hand (with a socket on the crankshaft pulley-turn clockwise), OR have a helper bump the starter over in as short bursts as possible. As soon as you feel pressure on your finger- stop turning- the piston in #1 is rising on its compression stroke. Now check the timing pointer or scale by the crank pulley. Turn the engine slowly on over until the notch or mark on the crank pulley is right on the zero degrees mark on the scale. This is TDC of compression stroke-the piston is at top of travel in the cylinder. Put the distributor in so the rotor will be pointing to the #1 spark plug wire.

I'm guessing a "weak battery" is the problem. Sometimes a fresh new battery can make a piece of equipment run "like new"..... Also, you might make sure battery is high enough capacity... If all this does you no good, I'd guess you have a "tired" or worn out starter...

How to adjust travel


1 intake down
2 compress up
3 power stroke down
4 exhaust up




if you start with you start with the piston just a couple of degrees past TDC (top dead center) so that it has started its return down


now set the valves so they are closed:
if you have an adjustable valve clearance's then your clearances should be noticeable like 10 thousands ( you should be able to move the lifter ( rocker arm ) and it will be loose up and down


with the spark plug still out; so you can see the piston coming to TDC and passing it to come down


turn the flywheel and watch the strokes and the condition of the valves


1 just past tdc, the intake valve opens and the piston goes down for the intake stroke


2. jst as the piston comes around BDC the intake valve should close and return to tdc with all valves closed ( the compression stroke )


3 just past TDC the ignition will fire and the piston will return down with both valves closed( the power stroke)


4 just past BDC the exhaust valve opend , the piston travels up and completes the exgaust stroke.




and after completing the exhause stroke and arriving at tdc the intake valve opens and you start over again 1,2,3,4

Reset timing


A little odd. Here's how to find TDC of the compression stroke: Pull #1 plug out, use a socket on crank pulley and turn clockwise with your finger over plug hole. As crank nears 0 degrees on compression stroke, you can feel the pressure build up under your finger. You wont feel any pressure on the exhaust stroke as crank approaches and passes the zero degrees mark. Keep turning one revolution till you are on the compression stroke-you will definitely feel the pressure build up. Stop at 0 degrees-Now the rotor SHOULD be pointing to number one spark plug tower. How can i keep the crankshaft from turning when removing the bolt?


If you pull a spark plug and turn the engine over until that cylinder is on compression stroke, go past top dead center,so the piston is going down ,take about 2 feet of rope,push it in the plug hole ,the rope will stop the rotation.Reason for being on compression is so the valves won't get bent when the rope contacts the head .

I am having a hard time getting my 02 pt cruiser on its compression stroke when i line up all my timing marks what am i doing wrong?

Starting problem after setting for ten days or more


Take the spark plugs out when this occurs and try to pull it through--does it expel fuel or oil? This should tell you whether you have a flooding fuel problem, or maybe the crankcase is overfull of oil causing it to leak into the combustion chamber through worn valve seals or piston rings. Yes i have tried everything to get a 1995 chevy astro van 4.3l in time .could you give me the steps to go by from scarcth,and how do you know which is the compression stroke? help plz


if you don't know which is the compression stroke, there's an easy way, but it may require extra hands to help. remove the number 1 spark plug, put you finger over the spark plug hole to where it seals the hole. turn the crankshaft clockwise, on the intake stroke you'll feel piston sucking air in, pulling on your finger. then it should start blowing air out the plug hole, hard enough where its hard to keep your finger covering the hole. this is the compression stroke. when the piston gets to the top of this stroke, the rotor inside the distributor should be lined up (or at least very close) to the corresponding number 1 on the distributor cap. if its 180 degrees off, you'll have to pull distributor out and realign it.
