Put the old plug back in it and see if it still does it? Was the plug the same make, type and number? Was it correctly gapped? Cap on securely?

No fuel or no spark. Quick test: spray some starter fluid into air intake and try to start it. If it runs and then dies, you've got spark but no fuel. If the bike quit with no prior symptoms, check spark plug wire not knocked loose, fuel filter clogged. (You do have gas, right?)

Yamaha 650 vstar not starting

did you check for spark ?
take the spark plug lead off and remove the spark plug
reconnect the loose spark plug to the spark plug lead - then place the spark plug on the engine and try to start - since you can see the live end of the plug - you should see a it sparking - do not touch the plug with the ignition on - or you will get a good jolt
test all spark plugs - if not here then it is probably a fuel problem

My motorbike takes while to start, and when it does it has no power

Starting problem and low power in Yamaha YZ 125 can be related to bad timing, please get the timing chain in engine adjusted for proper engine timing. Also get the electrical and CDI unit checked. If the spark plug is old then change that too even if its working. If you want to check the plug for its fitness then you can do it like the way its described here in this article: http://www.thenetguruz.com/auto/diy-fix-for-car-or-bike-engine-knocking/

Engine knock at high revs

Sounds like Pre-ignition, aka Detonation, aka Engine knock. Carbon deposits build up on the head, valves and piston. They can get hot enough to ignite the fuel before the spark plug has a chance to. This is the Pre-ignition noted above. This is VERY hard on the engine. Take the head off the cylinder then beat the valve area with with a hammer followed by aggressively beating the top of the piston. Pre-ignition does the same thing. Not good for the top end, and not good for the crankshaft. Use only good quality premium gas. Change to a spark plug one heat range colder than the stock plug. Seal up any air leaks on the intake system. Running a lean fuel mix means running hot.
