SOURCE: how to change oil for2007 heritage softail classic

The oil drain us usually a hose with a plug in it that is held by a clip on the frame. It us usually on the right hand side of the bike just behind and underneath the transmission side cover. Loosen the clamp and pull the plug out. The oil will run out of the tank. Replace plug and add new oil to the tank.

SOURCE: remove 2009 fxstb softail gas tank

I haven't worked on an '09 model but all the Softails I ever worked on had two tanks. To remove them, first remove the dash and any thing covering the "tank gap". There are three bolts on each tank half, two in the front of the tank and one at the rear. There is also two hoses that connect the two tanks to each other. One in front that is the fuel crossover. Make sure you drain as much fuel out of the tanks as possible before removing this line. Still there will be some gasoline spill out so don't be smoking while doing this job. The other hose is a vent hose at the top of the tanks under the dash. It just vents the left tank to the right one since the left tank gas cap does not have a vent built into it. If it did, gasoline would spill out when the tanks were full and you put the bike on the side stand. You may not have to remove both tanks to install your bars. I don't know where the handle bar wiring harness connects under the tanks.

Why are there two gas caps on tank

Goes way back.

The old 45" flatheads had the right tank for gas, and the left tank was oil.

Now it's a styling homage to the old days.

While my '08 Road King LOOKS like it has the old split tanks, it's really a 1-piece tank.

2008 hertige softail classic. Transmission problem. Sounds like a tapping or maybe marbles popping around. Someone suggested that a specific bolt may have come loose. Wondering how difficult it would be to...

I'm afraid that there is nothing simple about a transmission on your bike. The only thing that I can think of that would cause that is a loose front belt drive pulley. If this is the case, you must remove the entire primary drive from your Softail. This involves removing the engine sprocket, clutch, and starter. Then you'll need some special tools to remove and reinstall the front pulley. Check the final drive belt for a stone stuck on the inside of it between the "teeth" of the belt.

I just got a 1996 harley hertiage softtail--does it have a reserve tank valve? since ther is no gas gauge?

If your bike does not have a fuel gauge it's probably not fuel injected either. If this is the case, you should have a reserve setting on your fuel petcock unless it has been changed. Look closely at your petcock. It should have "on", "off", and "res" on it somewhere but the letters will probably be pretty small.

The '96 models were the first model to have the vacuum operated petcock and they were notorious for giving problems. Your petcock may have already been changed due to this. If not, I'd recommend installing a high quality manual petcock like a PIngle. They aren't cheap but it beats being stranded with a full tank of fuel in the tank but none in the carb.
