You are probably describing a frozen clutch caused by a long period of disuse - the clutch plates long pressed together under the pressure of strong springs have become frozen together.

Sometimes only dismantling the clutch will cure the problem. Lots of people just keep the revs low and jam it into gear and hope the shock loading will do the trick. A much kinder method is to start the engine with first gear selected and go for a ride - changing gear without the clutch is quite a trick but possible. Keep the clutch lever pulled and by the time the engine is developing high torque in a high gear most clutches would become unfrozen...

SOURCE: My 96 Triumph trophy 1200 won't go into 1st gear

this could be a slack cluch cable not disengaging the drive train,, or worst still a bent first gear selector with in the gear box, pricy to fix? dont start stamping on the gear leaver to forse it on gear!!!! you will only snap it off completly but the gear is still there it just hasent gone into gear yet! have you done an iol change lately? did you put the wrong oil in the engine?
ie:to thick??? that would do it too, plus look how old it is???? wear and tear on the box is normal,,,

SOURCE: 2003 ford explorer with a loud metal rattling noise sometimes it will vibrate too

Could be cam chain rattle. Famous for sloppy chains and inferior tensioners. Starts about 100k and downhill from there. Could try an engine flush as tensioners may be sludged. I have a 4.0L with a rattle at start up but stops after 5 seconds. Chain is shot.

Don't quote me, but nowhere in the parts lists does it say they are stretch bolts or one use. If in doubt, buy a new set.

1200 trophy stalls when I select a gear

If it goes in gear but the engine cuts out then either your sidestand switch is faulty (does the pin get pushed in when the stand is up - sometimes a bolt falls out and the switch pivots out of the way so the stand won't push it) or you clutch switch is faulty and the bike thinks the cltch is not pulled when you select gear.

Trophy 1200 overheating low mileage!

hey, just finished huge ride across europe on one. Look at radiator and water pump, check oil levels and type of oil used. sounds like a blockage in water pump and or, radiator or hoses. Check electrical fan is running after bike stops? If fan is not working the bike will over heat as it requires fan to draw air trough the radiator constantly. Terry Tourer Australia

Exhaust for trophy

If you want LOUD,then D&D's are what you're looking for.Staintune from Australia makes a nice sounding muffler for the Trophy, but they are pretty expensive.I went with the Trident mufflers from England and am quite happy with them.I think Thunderbike from New Zealand also makes a silencer for the 1200 Trophy.
