Greg Mahin is our Fixya expert and HD Dealer but I haven't seen him this week. It is a known issue. I found this
VIN ERR can occur at start up for a variety of reasons. Often when the bike is doing a hot start.
Ensure the battery is in good condition.
Also that the positive cable and negative battery cable is clean and tight at both ends.
Depending on what set up you have MAP/ECM wise, check that your automatic compression releases are set to the On position.
There is a new standard calibration available to stock 110" model bikes related to just this issue, however I think your model is a 103" so not sure if that has an option to be remapped.
The general idea of the new map is to allow for those first couple of turns of the engine to be easier by opening the ACRs as soon as the ignition is turned on and maintaining that position for approximately 10 seconds at which point they'll close regardless of whether the start button is pressed to avoid damaging the driver coils at which point another OFF/ON cycle is required to open them again. This creates less stress for the battery which if it falls below a certain voltage whilst starting will display VIN ERR on the speedometer.
The previous maps and likely what is on your bike only opens the ACRs when the start button is pressed which doesn't provide a time frame sufficient for them to do their job in certain situations.
As aggravating as it is, the VIN ERR displaying isn't going to harm your bike but you will occasionally experience more difficult starting like that feeling that the bike is barely turning over.
Not really solved your issue but it might be worth speaking to your dealer and seeing if you have the option of an updated map.

Does a wide glide fender fit a 2012 fat bob as I don't like the fat bob fender does any bobby have any ideas @

Hi, Ray parts swapping is common with most motorcycles when it comes to interchangeable or compatible parts from one model with another "EXCEPT" for the CDI's they are year-make-model "SPECIFIC" the best thing to do is call your local Dealership Parts Department or a reputable independent shop. If your location is not near a shop then go online and find a parts catalog or "FICHE" and match part numbers depending on your criteria.

Engine shuts off stopping

You could/should provide a whole lot more description of the problem and circumstances than this. Without more if your bike just quits at idle but will start and run otherwise it could well be the IAC. However if it is it will se a DTC and you should first see what codes are set, if any.

Engine and battery light comes on when riding

Hi Dolan, check your battery terminals for clean tight connections. Hook up a volt meter too your battery and run the engine up to 3600 RPM your meter should read 14.3 to 14.7 volts DC if it much lower you have a charging system problem. If it reads ok then do a load test on the battery or charge it overnight to get a reading of 12.5 to 12.8 Volts if much lower replace battery. Good luck

How do you open the gas cap for a harley fat bob 2008

Obviously it's not the stock gas cap. If it's a flush mount. You push it in then turn it to the left while it's pushed down. it will pop up, then you can unscrew it normally.
