Usually a badly adjusted clutch, warped clutch plates, or broken clutch springs. Too much drag in gear.

I am not really understanding what is going on...
.. OK...With ALL the clutch components and the drive chain removed - can you (in each gear) SPIN the main transmission shaft ALOT( 20+ turns) in the correct (drive) direction?..I think its counterclockwise.

It is important to remove the drive chain and all clutch components to do this check. You are checking for a SINGLE CRACKED GEAR TOOTH .. the crack will be at the base of a tooth.

Do this check exactly as described.. you are checking the functionality of the transmission alone. - no clutch-no drive chain. If you do have a cracked tooth, the transmission will only rotate about 340 degrees in either direction.
If it was the clutch giving the problem, it would happen in ALL gears...

After the check.. repost and we'll go from there.

I have a 2006 Yamaha TTR 230 that is stuck in 3rd gear. The clutch is adjusted properly and there is good oil in the motor/transmission. There are not that many hours on the bike and it has been serviced...

The usual cause is a bent shift fork or bent shifter shaft. Both could be present. Did the bike fall or strike a rock, tree or other object on the shifter side? There is an outside chance the shift limiter or index wheel has something funky going on. The mechanic will pull the left and right case covers off with the engine still in the frame. At this point he should be able to check the shifter shaft, shift limiter and index wheel. If no problem is found it will be time to pull the engine and split the case halves. This will give access to the shift forks. The cost will probably around $800 to $900... Bummer.

How do i on a motorcycle go to first gear from 5th

hi, if when you start your bike you press the gear lever down to go to 1st from neutral and then pull it back up to go to 2nd,3rd,4th and 5th then the only way to get back into first gear is to press the gear lever down 4 times to get it back into 1st gear their is no quicker way to do this you have to work your way back down the gears.

if your coming to a stop quick then just pull the clutch in and keep pushing the lever down until it dont push down any further it will only go down 1 gear at a time so you will need to push it down 4 times but you dont need to count you can just keep pressing it down the gears until it dont go down any more then you know this is first, you need to keep the clutch in when doing this.

how ever if your slowing down is more gradual then what you can do is go from 5th down to 4th then let engine slow the bike down then when the revs drop down change down to 3rd and so on until you get ot 1st gear.

if your coming to a stop quick say at lights or junction then if the bike is in 5th gear then you can change down the gears once the bike has stopped just hold the clutch in when you stop and keep tapping the gear lever down until you feel that its not going down any more gears this way you know its in 1st without having to cound down the gears, their id no quicker way of going down the gears to get to 1st.

i hope i have read your question right and gave you the answer you was looking for if i got the question wrong then please explain then i can assist you further ok

Clutch issues

Not overly familiar with your bike, but there is probably a kill switch on the center stand to stop the engine. This prevents the potential problem of coming off the center stand with the wheel spinning.
