1979 Yamaha TT500 old and rusty

I have a 1979 Yamaha TT500. Its real old and rusty and I just pulled it out from around my house today. Its been sitting outside under trees for a few good many years now and the exhaust, chain, kick stand, etc are all rusty. I was wondering what approach I should take with this bike because i want to see if it will run at all. I highly doubt it will but I plan on fixing it up and getting it ready to ride. Any help?

-Take the spark plug out of it and squirt some oil down into the piston and let it sit for a week or so.
-Lubricate rusty components with wd-40.
-Take the carb off and clean well , buy a carb kit and replace the seals and gaskets as well as the needle and seat valve, this all come with the kit.
-Clean the fuel tank and check all lines for cracks.
-Check all the vacuum lines for cracks or collapsed line, replace if necessary.
-Clean all wiring connections throughly.
-Replace the spark plug with a new one, and change the oil in the crank.
This should give you a good indication if it will run or not.
Good luck.

I have a 78 tt500 and I have just put on a lighting kit from kedo.and have also put on a front brake perch from an xt so that the brake light works.as the bike has no battery and is stock standard how do I...

All I can say about it is Motor out of the frame. One just have to do a compression test before pulling the motor. Not real good. If not satisfied pour a bit of oil in the sparkplug hole and tested again, almost 130 lbs. Top end time. When the oil will be drained the oil from the frame, the first thing out was several ounces of water.

1979 Yamaha XS 650 SF how does this exhaust come apart severely rusted

use plenty of penetrating oil
normally a exhaust shop would apply a lot of heat to the join as that breaks down the carbon/rust and allows it to tap apart
