1985 Honda XR 600 R no spark

Yeah Gregg is correct, especially when it's intermittent as you are stating. Start at the beginning with the easiest first. You don't want to just start swapping parts blindly. Motorcycle batteries don't last, in your explanation you said spark is on off some days, is this just on trying to start it or when it is running? How old are plug wires? No cracking or loose connections? All safety switched are good and clean? Kickstand switch, ignition switch, grounds, actual plugs? It's hard to diagnose when it is not happening all the time. But like I said when it does start at the simplest things always, do some testing, work from the start of the system of ignitiin. You know, put in key, check, turn key, turn to start, push start. Nothing? Check battery, battery good? Then check starter, voltage? Good? Then check spark- spark or no? Yes ? Well wait until it don't again. Then check coils and grounds, check coils for proper resistance according to manual, check proper voltage to ecm , check manual or online and it will tell you what to check to confirm that it is working right.
But remember little things first. Batteries, safety switches, grounds, plug wires, plugs, connections and wire condition.
Start at the beginning and if you need any help let me know. All I ride are pre 98 and below Honda's so I'm very familiar with your system.

Fuel starvation or plug / points / lead issue I would imagine . Check them out one by one . Check YouTube for videos if unsure .

My xr 600 seized while running I had a just replaced the cdi box and was running perfect. I was able to shift down to neutral and got towed home . I tried shifting up but can't get it into second to see...

Hi , Sorry to hear this about your bike but follow these instruction . Firstly remove the spark plug . put your bike with the back wheel off the grown and in any gear try to turn the back wheel . due to no compression you should technically turn the rear wheel in gear . If this does not work and it will not kick start without the spark plug out and still remain seized i am afraid that you will need to look at getting a new top end rebuilt . Give it a try and let me know how you go .

My 98 xr400 will not start. It seams to be flooded but it doesn,t even sputter if I don't move the choke at all. If I put the choke on half open it almost starts but then I think it floods. I changed...

Check to see if you have spark. Put a plug in the cap and touch the cylinder , kick it over to see if the plug is sparking. I kick mine 2 or 3 times to prime the cylinder holding decompression lever in. If it pops on full choke but does not start I go to half choke. If it does not start after 3 or 4 kicks , then I turn off the choke and kick it over 5 or 6 times with the decompression lever pulled to clear it. Then I will kick with no choke or half choke. Honda's are notorious for being cold blooded so when it starts let it warm up and do not be afraid to drive a short distance on half choke till the motor warms up a little.
When the machine is hard to start after sitting I usually start by removing the carburetor and shooting carburetor cleaner through the jets and passageways.I have always found my 96 xr400 to be a dependable starter with fresh gas and a clean carburetor. If it is flooded use the decompression lever to clear the cylinder.

My 1996 xr 250r wont start drom the kickstart but it will start if you pushstart it can any one help me??

Hi
If the kick-start is seized or lacks resistance when you try to turn it then the mechanism will have to be investigated
If the kick-start feels normal, the spark is good when kicking her over & the performance is well down then there is probably a lack of compression

No spark

get a copper wire and get it connected to any metal object like a bicycle.

then get another copper wire connected to the the spark plug's connector cap. rub the wires while kicking the bike start or trying it to start, if no spark goes off, meaning you have to change your coils, or something is disconnected or burnt from the coil

My XR 1991 250r is just not kicking over, there is a very weak spark there, could the coil be faulty ?

no, the coil works or it don't work. Take a look at the magneto, check your gap on the spark plug, and check the magneto and see if it is rusted. Your spark plug wire might also be cracked.

I have a 1989 honda xr 600. the only way i can start it is by push starting it. very inconvenient! when i kick it over it trys to start but never does. and also after riding it for a while it just dies...

Its as if the bike is straving for petrol.
I would advice you to tune the engine up,
check the spark plug to its condition.
Black/sooty = rich, brownish/whitish =ok. whitish= lean.
Check the petock, better too is to clean the carburator.
