Backfires can be caused when excessive fuel from cold starting ends up in the exhaust system and then ignites from a firing stroke from the engine. They can also occur if the engine timing is not correct. Kick starters are a mechanical way of turning over the engine, perhaps there is a problem with gears or levers that are employed on your scooter.

SOURCE: yamaha tw. noise from engine

Check and reset (if needed) the valve clearances. With the engine cold, set the intake to .002 and the exhaust to .003. Is the cam chain tensioner set properly? Burn premium gas and install a new NGK spark plug one heat range colder than stock to lessen any possible pre-ignition. Are there any signs of wetness, oil or blackish discoloration on the base of the cylinder head? > A blown head gasket can make a ticking sound also.

Lambretta kickstart problems

There can be several reasons for this. If there is a lot of chattering noise from the kick start then there is a mechanical interference between the kick start teeth on first gear and the kick start plunger. If there is no noise but the kick start does not return check if there is enough pre-load on the kick start return spring or that the kick start arm is not catching on an external part of the engine such as the exhaust tail pipe. Either way, you'll end up taking the side case off so tip the scooter on it's L/H side so you don't have to change the gearbox oil but remember to put it all back together before standing the bike upright, else the oil will pour onto the floor.

Hi there i have a ts 185 and when i kick it it fires and stops with a puff off smoke out of the carby can u tell me whats causing this to happen

Hi, does this bike backfire at all? Noticable as the kickstart hits you hard as you try to start the bike, these bikes used to suffer with cdi ignition failure, eventualy breaking the kickstart ideler gear inside the gearbox which in turn the oil pump drive was also fitted to this,

Hello I am having problems with my 2004 kawasaki kx 250f. The biggest problem of it all is that I am afraid of running the bike because I do not want to blow a head gasket. When started up the bike...

Starting problems on your bike are usually related to twisting the throttle too often. Remember, the carb has a diaphragm pump in it that gives a shot of gas each time the throttle is twisted. That means the engine can flood quickly if you get happy on the gas. Gently use the kickstart lever to ease the piston just past top center on the compression stroke. Now give a good strong kick. Repeat as needed.

When i kick my kick start over it stays down and you hear a grinding noise inside , can anyone help thanks jon

It sounds like your kickstart return spring has gone. The noise you hear with the kickstart still down is because it is still engaged. Dont let this happen, return it to the upright position. You will need to take the case cover off and have a look. On many bikes this spring can be replaced very simply, on others you may need tp strip the engine further. It would be worth investing in a workshop manual.

I try to kick start it and it just backfires, and then right after there is so much compressions it just about takes my leg off

hi,this should be fitted with a decompessor,if it is not, then try this, gently turn the bike over with the kicksart untill you feel the piston coming up to top dead centre (you will feel the compression rising)thenlet the kickstart return to its normall position, now give the kickstart a good healthy kick and the bike should fire up,if you think a 450 is hard work, wait till you try a 500 velocette with no decompessor if you dont get those things right they will either fire you over the handle bars into the workshop bench or break your leg in the process or worse a combination of both the above..good luck..hope this helps...cheers

2005 ktm 525 sx is hard to kickstart , is there any trick to maket it more easy to kickstart?

Yes, there is a proper way to start the engine. Four controls are on your bike to assist in starting.
  • The choke, used when the engine is cold. Pull the knob for choke.
  • The " Hot Start " Lever, used when the engine is hot. Pull the lever to lean the fuel mix when the engine has been running.
  • The de-compression lever, always used.
  • The throttle, used to prime the cylinder.
Don't kick, instead, push the kick lever downward. You will feel the back pressure as the piston is going upward on the compression stroke to the point the pressure is great enough that the kick lever "locks up". You are very close to TDC. NOW, pull in the de-compression lever. Push the kick lever a little bit more to get the piston past TDC. Now release the de-compression lever. Give the throttle a 1/4 turn then let it snap closed. A diaphragm in the carb gives a shot of gas when this is done. DO NOT do this multiple times because you will flood the engine. Leave the throttle closed when kicking. Now give a strong kick through the full sweep of the kick start lever. Quickly get your foot off the kick lever at the end of the kick to avoid any chance of "kickback" from the kick lever. This happens in the case of a misfire, aka > backfire. It can be very painful, and can even break a leg. I am serious about that. Repeat the process (but without the throttle priming), until the bike starts. A good battery, a clean spark plug, a clean carb and clean air filter will also aid in starting.

Engine Trouble

Your getting backfires? hmm interesting. Seems like your engine is getting flooded and either purging it out of the exhaust or burning it all at once or both (backfire). Sounds like a leaky engine valve to me.There again the bluish smoke indicates to me thatyou are leaking oil somewhere- bad rings or head gasket maybe, which could cause a loss of compression which could also cause your problems. That rattling from the left/rear side sounds like a bad muffler try kicking the muffler (not hard though) next time you walk by it.
