97 Nissan Pickup transmission swap for 95 or 96 transmission?

I have a 97 Nissan Pickup 2.4L 2WD Hardbody with a bad 5 speed transmission. Can't afford a new one and have found a few at the wrecker but they're out of a 95 and a 96. I can do the work but will either of these transmissions fit this year?

Yes this will fit, model years 88-97 will fit. I would recommend the newest model you can get, as they improved internal hardware after 93. hopefully this helps

Can I swap an engine from a '95 Nissan pickup (2.4) into a '96 4X4 which also has a 2.4?

Yes.. the 2.4 liter configuration will work as the same power plant is in both models. The issue will be the transmission mounting surface on the 4x4 vs the 2x4. You need to insure that the main seal area has same pattern and bolt pattern. YOu will also need to be conscious that the motor you are getting the 2x4 has been broken in on 2 wheel drive and a 4 wheel puts more torque and strain on engine.... so be sure once placed you give a good slow break in process or you could crack the block or crank shaft

When driving in 5th gear should the RPMs run at 3000 RMPS. Mine is a 4 cly 5 speed

You don't provide much information to go on (type of vehicle, type of engine, 2wd or 4wd, etc.) RPM is always going to be based on the speed you're traveling with a standard transmission. My 4 cyl 5 speed Nissan pickup in 5th gear runs at 3000 RPM at about 75mph.
