Sorry Gentelman you are wrong. I own a 1994 VS1400 Suzuki Intruder and I thought at first that there was something with me as well. I know very well that most bikes are 1 down and four up ( giving you 5 gears or speeds) but i was mistaken.

After an extensive look at my crank casing and the indicators on the casing right next to the gear shift .I noticed that there were indicators that said 1,n,2,3,&4.

So there you have it 4 gears on my 1994 Suzuki VS 1400 Intruder. Look for your self !!!!!

Your bike is a five speed just like the rest. If you are not able to shift into fifth gear the problem is usually a bent shift fork. This is a major repair and so is the cost.

    We have conflicting information as to 4 speed or 5 speed. Babbitt's sells parts for a 5 speed and the online motorcycle encyclopaedia "BIKEZ".com says it is a five speed. All references I have found say the 1994 VS1400 is a five speed. Two of my sources are shown below.

    Well Steve, it is odd that my two sources differ from yours. But since you have owned one, I will defer to your first hand knowledge. Four speed it is.

Take your bike for a ride and make sure that there really is a problem, count the number of possible shifts, and if you cant get past 4rth there is a problem. This could be a costly problem since theres lots of disambly involved when it comes to transmission problems. The most likely problem is the shift fork (the mechanism that engages and slots the gears together), it could be that its bent or broke, if you dont have a slight background with mechanical repairs, this job is best left to the profesionals.

Adding Reverse Gear To Some Harley's and Some Twin Cam/5 speed tranny's.

I have had quite a few questions regarding adding a reverse gear to bikes.

I am in the process of rebuilding my Suzuki VS800 Intruder and adding a Voyager Trike Kit to it. While searching, I found that Tabor Trikes USA has a Reverse Gear Kit for the following bikes;

Reverse Gear for Harley Davidson Motorcycles
Now available for 6 speed transmissions

Available for 1984-1999 Evo/5-speed and 1999-2005 Twin Cam/5-speed transmissions.

You can contact them for more information. There is a CONTACT link on the left side of the page. It's the bottom "Link Button". Please use it to find out if they have a Reverse Gear for your bike if it's not listed above. They are always adding new items.

Here is the Website Link. Tabor Reverse Gear Kit

The Reverse Gear Kits are expensive, $1349.00, but well worth the cost if you are disabled as I am. Here are the installation instructions;

I hope this helps in answering your questions regarding Adding Reverse Gears to your Bike.

When driving in 5th gear should the RPMs run at 3000 RMPS. Mine is a 4 cly 5 speed

You don't provide much information to go on (type of vehicle, type of engine, 2wd or 4wd, etc.) RPM is always going to be based on the speed you're traveling with a standard transmission. My 4 cyl 5 speed Nissan pickup in 5th gear runs at 3000 RPM at about 75mph.

1994 ranger in 3rd and 5th gears, it has a loud whine to it.

Mine has a high pitched whistle at high rpms and I can't figure it out. But mines def not the tranny. I'm thinking it's a vacuum line somewhere. It's a 97 2.3l manual. The colder it is the louder...

Motorguide Trolling motor has low thrust in all five speeds

I have a 4 speed with 48 lbs of thrust. On mine, 1 through 3 will move me out pretty well, however, 4th is similar to an overdrive gear in a car or truck and is meant more for maintaining a speed with less draw on the amps.

I certainly wouldn't want to take off with it. I suspect it is the same with your 5 speed. The boat needs to be up to speed and then those two gears will maintain it, with 5th being optimal as far as low draw in amperage.
