Sorry Gentelman you are wrong. I own a 1994 VS1400 Suzuki Intruder and I thought at first that there was something with me as well. I know very well that most bikes are 1 down and four up ( giving you 5 gears or speeds) but i was mistaken.
After an extensive look at my crank casing and the indicators on the casing right next to the gear shift .I noticed that there were indicators that said 1,n,2,3,&4.
So there you have it 4 gears on my 1994 Suzuki VS 1400 Intruder. Look for your self !!!!!

Your bike is a five speed just like the rest. If you are not able to shift into fifth gear the problem is usually a bent shift fork. This is a major repair and so is the cost.
We have conflicting information as to 4 speed or 5 speed. Babbitt's sells parts for a 5 speed and the online motorcycle encyclopaedia "BIKEZ".com says it is a five speed. All references I have found say the 1994 VS1400 is a five speed. Two of my sources are shown below.
Well Steve, it is odd that my two sources differ from yours. But since you have owned one, I will defer to your first hand knowledge. Four speed it is.

Take your bike for a ride and make sure that there really is a problem, count the number of possible shifts, and if you cant get past 4rth there is a problem. This could be a costly problem since theres lots of disambly involved when it comes to transmission problems. The most likely problem is the shift fork (the mechanism that engages and slots the gears together), it could be that its bent or broke, if you dont have a slight background with mechanical repairs, this job is best left to the profesionals.
My 93 intruder 1400 is also 4 speed i bought it and was like something not rite i can't get 5 th well after looking at it found I actually bought 4 speed Nd yes 75 plus vibration sucks
