    Sounds like you have jets that are partly clogged. Remove the carb, then remove the jets ( pilot-main ) ream them with a small piece of wire until you can see thru them while holding them up to a light. I like to use a bristle from a wire brush because they are firm and also thin enough to go thru the jet.

SOURCE: Ktm 520 2000 Model STARTER PROBLEM

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Initially, determine if there is a clicking sound when the START button is pressed. The click is significant. If there is, this indicates that the starting relay is engaging but for some reason, the starter motor is not cranking. This could either indicate a faulty starter relay (particularly the contacts) or a faulty starter motor (specifically, the carbon brushes). To determine which:

  • with the side covers off, expose the starter relay particularly the 2 large terminals;
  • have somebody start the bike normally using the key and button start switch;
  • determine if indeed the clicking is coming from the starter relay;
  • while the start button is still pressed, jump the 2 big terminals;
  • if the engine cranks, then the internal contacts of the starter relay are corroded or burned;
  • if the engine will not crank, then the starter motor is faulty.
Good luck and thank you for using FixYa.

If it's a real bugger to kick start, install an 09 cam, works wonders. Go to KTMtalk.com to inquire about emissions removal

check inlet valve clearances. they close up making it hard to start exactly as you described. titanium valve coatings wear and ressesion happens quickly,a clean air filter must be maintained to prevent contaniments wearing valve coatings.

Look into your power valve. If it doesn't operate freely, you won't get peak performance. They can get gummed up.

My son's KTM 50 senior pro doesn't start. has petrol vapour coming out of the pipe.

The engine is running too rich. The carburator needs tuning to get the fuel mixture correct or the choke may be stuck in a partially closed position.
