SOURCE: petrol lawnmower cutting out.

try changing the spark plug. if that doesnt work check the fuek lines for hole and leaks, check the fuel filter and clean if necessary. remove the carbuerator and inspect the gasket; it should be soft and flexible, if it seems hard or brittle replace it. clean the carb with carb cleaner sray (available at any local auto parts store) and compressed air. make sure you get inside the small fuel rail holes. also check the primer bulb for pin holes and proper seating/seal.

SOURCE: my lawnmower engine cuts out

I was having the exact same problem with my 6.5 hp Toro lawnmower with a Tecumseh engine. The engine would start up okay but after a few minutes of mowing, the mower would start missing and eventually shut down. I would pull and pull and pull on the starter rope, getting angry and frustrated and eventually going back in the house to let it cool down.

I looked up all kinds of information and I finally decided it was a bad coil (something about the resistance being low when the mower wasn't hot and then when it heated up the coil would conduct enough electricity to somehow make the engine shut down.)

I called a local shop and wanted to get an estimate on replacing the coil. I have no clue about engines so I dared not get into the guts of the mower myself. He told me to check the gas cap. HUH??????

He told me to make sure there wasn't a part missing out of it. I thought, what the heck would a gas cap have to do with the engine shutting down. Well, apparently there is a mechanism on these caps that prevents a vacuum from pulling on the fuel system and my gas cap indeed had a part missing. To verify this, I cut the grass for about 5 minutes. When it started to run rough, I took the gas cap off to allow pressure to escape from the gas tank and voila! it started to purr like a kitten.

So, I'm only out $4 for a new gas cap and I'm as good as new. Man I wish I was more mechanically inclined so I hope your problem is as easy to solve as this one.

Hope this helps!

SOURCE: brand new honda lawnmower starts and runs fine then backfires

There should be 1 or 2 screws on the carb. You will probably have to remove the air breather to get to the screw(s). I've been seeing a lot of these types of questions, new equipment not running properly. Factory settings were not set properly.

When you find the screw(s), screw in a clockwise direction until it stops; DON'T SCREW DOWN TIGHT, JUST UNTIL IT STOPS. Then unscrew counter clockwise 1 1/4 turns. Try starting.

Continue this process, 1/4 turn at a time up to 2 1/2 full turns. If you forget where you are at on the turning process, start over by screwing back down. Then pick up process where you left off.

If you need further assistance, just let me know.

Carba/f ratio needs adjusting and use of the choke will help keep the idle circuits clean.

Yamaha 5500P industrial series generator. It started back firing and will almost die then power back up. Was running great then just one day started this. At first I thought condinsation as it seemed to...

Start by replacing fuel. Completely drain the tank and carburetor fuel bowl. Do not use what fuel you may have, get 2 gallons of fresh fuel from gas station. If problem clears then likely water in fuel.

If still backfires with fresh fuel then likely an ignition issue. Failing ignition module or possibly a sheared flywheel key. Try reducing spark plug gap to .025" .

Basic lawnmower spring maintenance

Before it gets too late its worth firing up the lawnmower (and any other garden power tools) to make sure they are running well for the coming months. Here are a few basic tips to make sure it will be worry free for the summer.

Give it gas: fill it up with fresh quality gasoline (mixed properly with fresh oil if its a 2 stroke). Old gas is not the same as new gas, volatile compounds will evaporate over time leaving you with gas that is harder to burn. Ideally you have used up everything in the tank the previous fall.

Let it breathe: make sure the air filter is clean. For foam filters you can just clean them with a bit of gasoline (you can use the old stuff if you still have some). Paper filters need to be replaced, typically every year.

Light the fire: a strong spark is the key to reliable ignition. If the first two tips don't give good results its probably time to change the spark plug.

I have a 1994 Yamaha 40 horsepower 2-stroke outboard motor turns over won't start doesn't seem like it's getting gas change the fuel line any other suggestions

Try removing a spark plug and make sure you are getting spark. If there is spark put a couple tablespoons of premixed fuel directly into the cylinder before putting the plug back in. It should fire right up, and hopefully will speed up the priming of the fuel system. Hope this is of some help to ya, good luck.

I put 2 stroke and unleaded mixed in my dt 125 but i have a seperate tank for 2 stroke,it started to smoke then cut out and now it isnt starting and is not gettin a spark

Putting fuel mixed with the oil shouldn't hurt anything, you must have just fouled the plug, get a new plug in there and see if it fires. NGK is the best for 2 stroke.. If it fouls out again, drain the tank or most of it and put in fresh gas, it should clear up. The mix is very slight with the injectors running, I had oil injection on my old Saab and used to put in the premix all the time just in case, always had extra plugs with me cause they always fouled out. My wife would come home and say whats for dinner, i would have the spark plugs in the oven baking.

After starting my motor it back fire is timeing off or what on a fj 1200 yamaha

ignition timing should not change(electronic ignition), if it runs reasonable valve timing is probably ok,
back fire can be lean fuel mixture, low voltage, intake leaks, exhaust leaks, tight valve clearance, burnt valve, loose electrical plug on ignition system, shorting cut off switch, including, clutch lock out and side stand switches

It turned out that the ignition key was faulty and it cut out my fuel pump and power to my spark plug but all other electrics worked. Tried my spare key and could hear fuel pump working pressed starter and it fired up how bizarre is that. so problem sorted.
