SOURCE: 1969 Chevy 327cid ignition timing

Hey Ron, The timing is more dependant on the gas/compression you run than "stock timing".. The gas of old was higher octane and leaded .. to get this type of gas now you have to search. MAKE SURE you have an ACCURATE TEMPERATURE GAUGE!!! ( I occasionally run some 110 octane leaded gas in my bass boat (the motor is ported, heads milled, rejetted to run and last..you can run a toothpick through the 6 main jets..it LIKES gas).
...OK.. the gas of now is ..well.. not for hot rod motors.. the timing can run from 4* BTDC..up to 10* BTDC (HOT ROD MOTORS) I would start at 4* and see how she runs...the more advanced, the better it will run - and get better mileage - TO a point..then you can hand grenade the motor..The timing on a high performance motor depends a lot on compression and the octane fuel you are running, the better the components inside the motor, the more advance it can stand..
NOW -- I would much rather have a motor that WILL LAST - NOT BREAK,, and have A TINY bit less HP....its you money... (I run my outboard at 4* retarded from stock recommendation setting..AGAIN - I have run the HECK out of it for 12+ years and its still strong..recommended RPM range is 5000 - 5500 - I run mine at 5800 for miles..I did all the work on it..
-- Start at 4* advanced... see how she runs... then try 6*..WATCH THE TEMP GAUGE.. go to 8*.. after running a while,
check your spark plugs.. THIS IS the way to "tune" your engine. ... see if they show and signs of unusual wear, detonation, melting, seeing tiny spots on the electrode or porcelain....etc..If you are not sure about reading a spark plug.. ask around until you can find someone that is. .take all your spark plugs with you to the local drag strip.. see who's running a small block chevy.. ask them about reading spark plugs.. they should help you. Good Luck..

Testimonial: "ok- thanks Steve, here is a little more info..... the motor has an AFB 600cfm carb & scorpion dominator intake (single plintum), 202 fueler heads. Its in my 74 CJ5, way to much for the jeep but I was given it by a late family member and am just getting around to messing with it, the jeep has been sitting for many years in my shop and I have got the fuel system squared away recently. So today I put the battery in it and to my surprise it started up first try! Got a bit of a miss though so I'm thinking of a tune-up --plugs, wires, cap & rotor, filters, oil change. Got any other suggestions???"
