I had same problem, found the Positive cable from battery has parted inside the plastic cover. the cable was broken, but was making and then breaking with the movement of the bike. the bike would run then stop, then would restart later, when running, the engine would sometime spit. replaced the cable with a longer cable , (it was at the starter end of cable that parted) bike working good now.
Good luck

The age old adage holds true here: If it aint broke don't fix it. :)
If the bike is still running good and you have taken good care of it there is no reason to overhaul it. There are many bikes out there that have done well over 100k miles and are still running strong. There have actually been dyno test ran on bikes with over 100k miles and they made better horse power than they were rated at from new. This is attributed to slightly looser bearing clearances with the engine being well broken in.
I would recommend overhaul if you start having problems. These issues would include, low power due to low compression, excessive oil consumption, excessive smoke from tail pipe, excessive fuel consumption. Even then I would recommend good diagnostics and if the issue is found to be internal then I would recommend an overhaul.
Only running good with the choke on is an indicator that the bike is normally running too lean. The fact that it runs good with the choke on at least tells me it is getting fuel to the carb(s). Therefore it seems probable that there is clogging in the carburetor jets or there is a big air leak between the engine and carb(s).
the air flow is change, and changes many other things too.
see also airfilters are clean, good oil frech.hows compretion from cilinder
how are the sparkplugs, whits color do they have.tires are good not to low.try to restore to the original.always the best.you can never get any car or bike better then factory.there are many books to find.maybe this one has rpm security contact.
barb needs cleaning or a rebuild-itz 27years--varnish solidifies on the internal parts and passages and a strong solvent is required--carb cleaner will not work
I doubt the bike has 100k on it, thats alot of riding! If it runs and looks good just figure it is a typo and ride it. As far as the oil filter that bike uses a spin on filter, it is painted black, screws on the front of the engine just above the oil pan just to the right of center.
