I have a 2013 toyota corolla, had a bad habit of putting gas only a few gallons at a time, it has 43,000 miles on it, ive made it a note to start putting gas every time it gets to a quarter tank

this sounds like the electric fuel pump in the fuel tank has failed, replace the pump and filter togeather.

without a fault code its impossible to diagnose. try pep boys or aamco or auto zone they will pull the code for you, usually for free. The code will relate to a sensor or area to be fixed. This will save you money and needless parts . post the code or codes so we can help

If the fuel gauge drops off when you are driving then its a sending unit problem that means you have to drop the tank and replace the float and sending unit. This is a common problem for alot of cars because of cheap gas. If you have to drop the tank check the fuel pump canster for dirt because of cheap gas. Replace the fuel pump strainer and fuel pump filter. If the car or truck has about 100,000 miles you might want to change the fuel pump at that time also just to cover your back. If you take it to a shop they will charge you at least $900 to start. But if you do it yourself it will cost you about $200 dollars maybe alittle more.

Per Edmund's.com your car should do 23-38 mpg. to know your exact usage fill up the tank and write down how many gallons it took to fill it up and zero the trip mileage, drive til the tank is empty ( do not get stranded) do your math miles/gallons this is your true usage it should fall within 23-38 mpg and that is 45% hwy driving and 55% city driving. if you are getting below 23 then you need to do a tune up like change air filter, fuel filter, spark plugs, oil change using 1 part synthetic oil, proper tire pressure ( low tire pressure cause you to use more gas).

I have the same issue of low gas mileage. My 2008 Kia Rondo with V6 (2.7Lt) gets 20-21 mpg in average. Even for highway mileage, it is around 21-22mpg. Very poor gas mileage. Disappointed. I hope it would improve in the future.
