It's trial and error. If it's a stock points style ignition start with factory settings. If it's an aftermarket electronic ignition, you'll need to know how much vacuum, mechanical or electronic advance there is. Most street engines work best with around 32 to 36 degrees total advance. So you use a timing light to set basic timing at 10 to 14 degrees BTDC, and find out how much vaccum, mechanical or electronic advance there is by 4500 RPM ( it's usually best to have all the advance in by 3600 RPM for a street or strip car). Then reset idle speed and use a stopwatch to test 0 - 60 MPH times and go with what setting gives you the fastest time without pinging. Maybe even a couple more degrees retarded for street use on pump gas ( you can always bump it up a few degrees at the track or when using octane boosters).

My 1969 camaro rs-ss is running richa what can i do?

Hello Brennen Best,

Eliminating FORD
(which Enzo Ferrari found out is not as EASY as it sounds)...
((all seems like only yesterday))...

The remaining big name USA CARBS were Rochester,
Carter & Holley... and 1969 was right EXACTLY
when the government was trying to SMOGIFY
all domestic "PRODUCTION" carburetors...
(certainly in CALIFORNIA)... (opinion: disastrous waste).

Your CAMARO had about 8 (eight) engine choices...
(not knowing which engine and CARB... Is not going to
attract your BEST fixya guru... (I was a Holley EXPERT
(I never saw a PRODUCTION Holley on a Camaro)).

It was a SHORT LIVED exercise in ELITIST...
aloof, ignorance, arrogance futility...
as most GOVERNMENT IDEAS are... and was
soon abandoned IN FAVOR of an entire generation
of LARGE GUTLESS (detuned) production engines.
(but the year 1969 remains nefarious... in the memories
of HIGH PERFORMANCE enthusiasts).

The long & short of my BABBLING... There might still be
some of those CARBURETORS out there... That were
specifically designed NOT-TO-BE properly adjusted.

Name names (eg: Carter AVS)... attract the right help...!!

In order to get to the PROPER TALENT level
here on FIXYA... You need to put a NAME on the
carb...

Still promising engines...
Just need to retrofit the right CARB

Where is the main fuel line intake on my holly 4 barrel carb?

If it has a hose hookup you attach it there with a clamp or if you do not have the proper fitting or fuel line end you will have to get the proper parts.

I have a 89 plymouth voyager i changed fluid and filter and i still have to get up to 55 or 60 mph before it will change gears what do i need to do for it to change right i was told to change the sensors...

if you have a 3 speed transmission the problem could be with the tv rod . It goes from the carb or fuel ing. to the transmission. the rod could be hanging or the spring may have broke. If you have the 4 speed trans. you will need to have the computer scaned

Looking for info on how to adjust the fuel mixture and Idle on a 1969 Corvette 427 400 HP Tri-power 3x2 carburetor.

That engine runs at low speed, starts and idles on the center carb only. first make sure the carbs are synchronized so the front and rear ones are fully closed at idle, then adjust idle speed and mixture on the center carb. Sweet ride by the way, if you get tired of working on it and want to get rid of it I will take it. LOL

Voltage intermittent, engine missing at all speeds, affect auto trans. shifting, kills hot or cold

The charging system, pedal, and sensors have been checked. The trans. problem and missing problems were the original problems and when my mechanic finally sent me to Chev. none of the problems " choose to show themselves." I should know on Mon. if my mechanic has solved the problems with the greater number of symptoms. Keep me in your files. More later-  Bill
