Yamaha XVS 1100 Dragstar Classic 2006 - won't start. It cranks, but with a terrible clanking noise.

Probably under the riders seat or some where near the battery.

Compare the different models or simply ask the consultant a direct question. I always do this before making a purchase. Motorcycles older than 1990 have their own characteristics that should be considered when replacing parts.

check the fuel filters, it sounds to me as though there is a partial blockage which allows just enough to sustain tickover and starves the bike upon rev up. this is the first step to check and the most likely. good luck.

remove the carb change the bottom bowl gasket, check float adjust the float normally overflow will happen when the float is not working or the float controlling pins is not working change the float controlling pin.

Most bikes after so many miles(dont know what that number is for your particular bike)Need a valve adjustment.See how many miles are on bike and find out how many miles you need before you do valve adjustment.the tapping is usally more pronounced when bike idles because of low oil pressure,as long as noise goes away when you rev motor up its just a ajustment.if this noise gets worse then it could be an oil pressure problem.

I had a new 2000 XVS1100 (US Model) It got between 40 and 45 miles per gallon. It was a great bike!

Check the fast running jets in the carbs as they could be clogged.
