I have a 1986 vt700c I just got it and the guy said it needs a master cylinder for the clutch I replaced that but it will start and idle fine but as soon as I put it in gear it dies

hi,i have the 1100c model.on my one its on the right hand side and if you take the pastic casing off at the engine just at your front foot peg its under that.i hope that helps.irish biker

some of these were manual clutch cable check adjustment of cable at firewall (bulkhead) and check for cracks around where cable goes through to inside cab common on old girls.
if hydraulic clutch system
check fluid in clutch master cylinder is it low?
it could have leaking slave cylinder on gear box bell housing or your clutch needs replacing, gear box out and replace clutch as a kit, pressure plate, clutch plate, thrust bearing (comes as kit) but dont forget to check and or replace the spigot bearing in the rear of the crank shaft when doing clutch kit.

i would look to a faulty seal in the slave cylinder, but would expect to find a fluid leak also above that i cant help

Start with the slave (release) cylinder. First take off the line and plug it with a golf tee or a short piece of hose with a bolt in the end. Remove the slave cylinder. Fill the new one with fluid and do the reverse. Then do the same thing with the master cylinder being careful not to lose any fluid. You may need to add fluid and bleed the system when finished.

Check the vacuum booster first
Shut the car off after it idles for 3 minutes
Apply your foot on the brake and hold
If the pedal seems hard at first and did not go down all the way keep your foot on it for two more minutes
If the pedal gradually goes down to the floor the brake booster is leaking
If not start the car and let idle again
\With the car still idling step on the brake pedal again and hold
If the pedal goes to the floor in a second the master is shot instead

Make sure the slave cylinder body is attached firmly, then bleed the air out of the hydraulics--similar to bleeding brake lines. Watch the clutch mechanics while someone operates the clutch, (engine off) you should see definite movement. If you get movement and no clutch action, you may have to reappraise your clutch installation. Hope this helps!

i have a 1978 gs1000 it has a cable it did the same thing but i think you may find that there is still a little air in the line look to see if the push rod is worn or just needs to be adjusted

Did you bleed the system? There is probably a bleeder on the slave cylinder and you may need to jemmy the selector fork/ Also look fro a damper valve between the master and slave cylinder... it will need bleeding too.
