Most low idle speed problems on these engines are due to a faulty idle air control valve but since you state the idle will go up and return to idle then i would say it is working properly i think you have a throttle body coking problem ( dirt and grit accumulates around the butterfly valve in the throttlebody ) to fix this simply remove the fresh air hose from the throttlebody and open the throttle all the way up use a clen rag and wipe clean you may use a solvent such as B12 on the rag but dont use too much
i would do a few things here, simply spend $8 on some injector cleaner to break down carbon deposits, then try replacing the fuel filter, lastly, get the timing checked, plug gaps {new plugs} clean oxygen sensor in exhaust then lastly get the fuel pump pressure checked at a mechanics, all in that order untill it works, Good luck
What type of gearbox is fitted auto or manual.Auto has a allen key level plug you take out underneath and fill in top (looks like a breather near the front.Manual filler is next to the c.v. joint . Also check the i.r.d filler next to the rear propshaft output.
you should check your timing and make sure you're getting good spark. fuel could also be the issue, filter or injectors. There are a few different things it could be but i would check ignition related issues first
