I have an 1986 Yamaha Venture Royal 1300. Bought used and at that time it would start if clutch was pulled in regardless of what gear it was in. Clutch cable came apart at the handle so I have resured the cable so it will shift but now the bike will only start if it is neutral. Is this normal?
There is a tiny switch at the clutch lever housing assembly, the wires that are on tht switch may hve been distrubed unknowingly whilst you were refitting the cable.
Not bad too if you can check the switch which has a tiny protusion towards the clutch lever, it may probabley need a little adjusting or cleaning, spray some WD40 to it.
To access it from the lever side , it would be best to remove the clutch lever.
Hope this helps!
Dkinney...The clutch switch is sticking you'll see a plunger that should extend when the lever is pulled.
mmcgee....if the bike stalls when you shift out of neutral, and your sidestand is up, your sidestand switch plunger may be sticking.

Didn't see anything in the wiring. I will spray with WD40 and clean the contacts see if that works. I will let you know.
I have a 1986 Venture royale, the cluth is hydraulic, not cable. After rebuilding the clutch master cylinder, no more leaks but the bike stalls when I shift out of neutral, does that clutch switch have anything to do with my condition? MCMFIRE
