How can I get wiring schematics

The bike will not start or run I need to see where power is routed for start switch to solenoid.

First your statement about the rewired headlamp switch is a worry, all your wiring would now be suspect and have to be verified. Did it ever work correctly? If you have a side stand switch it could be broken or also incorrectly wired and kills the engine when you put it in gear, that feature is there to prevent an accident by attempting to drive with the side stand still down. Look there, if you don't have a wiring diagram for the bike, then purchase a service manual, it will become your favorite bedtime reading for awhile. Good Luck!

You didn't mention what year model your bike is so I'll just generalize my response. Since you said that you replaced the solenoid, I'll assume that your bike is a 1988 model or earlier.

Your bike has a starter relay if it still has the stock wiring on it. Harley has used a starter relay since 1965 on the first model of ElectraGlide. Usually, it's underneath the battery tray or the seat or around that area.

On the back of your solenoid, you have three wire connections. Two very large connectors and one small connector. Make sure your bike is out of gear (in neutral) and use an old screwdriver to short between the large connector that comes from the battery and the small wire connection. The starter should engage and try to start the engine. If the ignition switch is on, it will start the engine. The starter will turn using this method with or without the switch being in the "on" position. If the starter works using this method, the problem is in either the relay or the neutral switch. If the starter does not turn the engine over, the problem is in the solenoid.

Now, let's check a few things. The small connector on the back of the solenoid should have a green or pink (depending on year) wire on it. Using a voltmeter or a test light, make sure you have voltage at the connector when you press the starter button with the switch in the "ON' position. If not, follow the wire to it's source, the relay.

The starter relay can be one of several different designs used throughout the years. It could be a small plastic cube, a small metal can, or a round phonelic relay. The relay should have four connections on it. A "hot" wire, a wire from the handlebar switch, the wire going to the starter, and a ground. The ground may be through the case itself. On the older Shovelhead bikes (1984 and earlier) there was a small short black wire that ran from the starter relay to the transmission for the ground. This wire must be intact or the relay would not work due to lack of a ground.

When you turn the switch on, one of the wires to the starter relay should become "hot". When you press the start button, you should hear a slight click and another of the smaller wires should now be "hot" as well, the one going to the starter.

On some year (1972 and later) models, the neutral switch was wired in with the starter relay. This was to prevent the bike from starting while "in gear" by disabling the relay. You'll have to figure this one out for yourself since I don't know what year model your bike is.

Now, you said you had power to the solenoid when you pushed the starter switch. So, let's assume that the starter failed the first test to told you aboue. If so, the problem is still most likely in the solenoid. Inside the solenoid, there is a large plunger with a copper disc on it. When you depress the starter switch, the coil in the solenoid becomes magnetized and pulls the plunger towards the back of the solenoid. This does two things, it engages the starter drive with the ring gear on the outer clutch drum and makes a high current electrical connection. The copper disc makes contact between the two large connections on the back of the solenoid from the inside. This connects the battery to the starter motor through the solenoid. If the black phonelic plate on the back of the solenoid is cracked or the contacts inside of it are badly burned, it will not work.

Now, if the solenoid is working correctly and you are getting voltage to your starter, it could be the brushes or something inside the starter. This is indicated if the starter trys to turn the engine over but just can't. It won't have enough power if the starter field windings are bad.

I hope I've given you something here that will help you solve your problem. This is basically the electrical part of the starter system. There are mechanical parts as well. This is a possibility. The header says you're working on a 1979 XLH 1000cc Sportster. This is not a 250cc bike and it takes a good battery to start and engine of this size. I've never seen a CCA rating on the battery requirement in a service manual but it does say that the battery should be capable of at least 32 Ahr.

The starter motor continues to run when the car is running on a 1999 Buick century

The Starter motor can keep running because of a number of things. It receives its power from the large contacts (switch) in the starter solenoid. WHen engaged, this starter sol. allows high current 12 volts to run the starter motor.
A number of things can cause the starter solenoid to stay engaged:
A) stuck starter solenoid mechanicals. probably not the cause
B) more likely a defective start position on the ignition switch in the ignition switch
C) possibly a gummed up ignition key tumbler
I would start troubleshooting with a schematic. Make your own or purchase a service manual. IF you pull off the wire from the switch (in the center console) which actuates the starter solenoid, and the starter motor continues to run, then its not the switch or the key tumbler. its the solenoid.
Troubleshooting is the logical process of elimination.

Hi I have a 1995 FXD, Superglide. when I went to started my bike I half clicked the starter and released. Not meaning to start my bike and as I did so complete electrical failure. Battery has charge.

Hi Ben and the usual suspects are:
1. Ignition switch not in the "ON" position.
2. Engine run switch in the "OFF" position.
3. Discharged battery, loose, corroded or broken battery cables, especially the "NEGATIVE" cable at both ends (solenoid chatters).
4. Bank angle sensor tripped and ignition/light key switch not cycled to the "OFF" position and then back to the "ON" position.
5. Security alarm needs a reset.
6. Starter control circuit, relay, or solenoid faulty.
7. Electric starter shaft pinion gear is not engaging or over-running starter clutch slipping.

Go online and find out what is in between the solenoid start from the ignition for the battery to the solenoids the spark plug check the route from start to finish make sure the wires are connected nice and tight to get wiring schematic

2001 Night Train will not start. Starter realy has been replaced and that did not help. There is auxilary power but nothing when the starter is hit.

My F250 1988 truck won't turn over. I replaced ignition switch on column, and replaced starter solenoid. I think it may be the ignition wire but I need to verify routing before I start cutting and...

Call Autozone or Oreillys and see if they show an Ignition relay for your truck. This relay would kill power to the Ignition switch.

If no relay, check the small wire or wires on the Starter Solenoid with a test light or 12 volt meter. Have a helper turn the key to Start with the small wire disconnected from the Solenoid. If no helper, Ground Neg. end of tester to vehicle and the other end to the disconnected wire and put the tester where you can see it light up or the meter move.

Then turn to Start position and see if the tester lights up or the meter move. These small wires go back to the Ignition keyswitch. If no power to the Solenoid, the wires are bad.

You can jump the Starter Solenoid with a screwdriver or Battery cables If the truck is in Park or Neutral and the Ignition is ON, the truck will start and run until you shut it off.

Double check your new Solenoid, for the right type. There are Negative and Positive ground Solenoids. There are 1 and 2 wire terminal types which is easy to see. But the Positive ground Solenoids go on Boats and are also used on Hydraulic pumps for heavy equipment.

The wiring is simple for a starter. You have a starter solenoid on the bike and a starter relay. When you press the button to start your bike, the button has a wire that runs to the relay. This triggers the coil in the relay and pulls the contacts in. You have three wires that run to the relay for the starter. One hot wire, a trigger wire from the starter button and a wire from the relay to the solenoid. When you press the button, the relay pulls in and makes the wire going to the solenoid "Hot".

The solenoid has three wires going to it. The large battery cable goes to the "long post" of the solenoid, There's another battery cable going to the starter from the bottom of the solenoid, The wire from the starter relay goes to the small terminal of the solenoid. The small wire from the starter relay is the trigger wire for the starter solenoid. When this wire goes hot, it magnetizes the solenoid and pulls the plunger inward. The plunger bridges two large contacts in the solenoid to put high current voltage to the starter.

If your bike isn't doing anything, it sounds like you may have something wired up incorrectly. Didn't I send you a wiring schematic for that bike off forum?

Anyway, to start off trouble shooting the problem, take a test light and touch the small terminal on the end of the starter solenoid. When you press the start button, you should have power there. If so, you have something wrong with your starter solenoid.

If you do not have any voltage at this point, you may have a problem with the starter relay. The relay should be a round relay with three terminal connections on it as well. When you turn the switch on, the large terninal with the two red wires on it should have voltage on it. Now, there are two other wires that go on the relay and both are black. When you press the start button, one of the black wires should have voltage on it. This wire should go to the small terminal on the relay. The other black wires runs from the remaining large terminal on the starter relay to the small terminal on the starter solenoid.

When you press the start button, the black wire running to the small terminal on the starter relay goes "hot" and energizes the relay. When the relay closes, the large terminal with the black wire on it goes "hot" sending voltage to the small terminal on the starter solenoid. This energizes the solenoid and pulls in the starter motor.

On the starter solenoid, there are two large terminals. The longer terminal is where the large battery cable connects. The shorter large terminal is where the cable that runs to the starter connects.

Check all of this and let me know what you find and we'll go from there.

I had my 2001 Fatboy running 2 weeks ago, went to start it today - no power (lights accessories, anything) put the battery charger on it & still nothing - checked all the fuses & all were good -...

The power from your battery goes fromt the positive post of the battery directly to the starter. At the starter, there should be two connections. The large battery cable and a smaller red wire. This red wire is "hot' wire to all the "accessories" on your bike. The wire runs straight from there to the ignition switch. If you don't have power to the main switch, you have a main fuse blown somewhere. You'll need a schematic to trace the wiring out from there. I'm sorry but I don't have a schematic for that model bike. Make sure all your connections are clean and tight and your "Run/Stop" switch in the in the proper position.
