Question about Harley Davidson FLHTCUI Electra Glide Ultra Classic Motorcycles

Why did I was my 2005 Ultra Classic trike engine shut off while driving, start back up, went a few miles, before shutting off? Is that the kill switch malfunctioning?

The engine runs but shuts off while I'm driving. After stopping the bike, the starter switch doesn't respond. After a few minutes, the bike starts, let's me travel a few miles before the engine shuts off again.

Sounds like you may be low on oil. Bike runs until oil is pumped on top of engine, and not enough remains to coat the sensor. Engine shuts off, oil returns to reservoir, bike runs again....i guess that's why they call it a motor cycle....

SOURCE: 2005 Ultra Classic ,Speedo Cuts Out Which In Turn

I believe the turn sigs, speedo and cruise are all controlled in part at least by a module under the fairing. It may need replacement or it could just be a loose wire. Sounds more like a loose wire plug or bundle, if intermittent.

Check the vent in your fuel cap. If the vent is stopped up, a vacuum will build up in the tank and no fuel will flow even with a pump.

sounds like tranny problem/ and a bit of carb trouble i suggest clean the carbs/clean the tank....put some seafoam in the oil drive about a mile then change the oil don't dive any farther than that with seafoam in the oil or the clutch might burn out (seafoam is at any auto store 8-10 bucks does awesome things)

Engine would not start and now the battery is swollen


Hi check polarity of battery ,2 look at the wiring loom look for cable damage shorting burning ,3 I think its more than likely this , you need to ask why when you hit the kill switch did it not shut off ,4 check the rectifier , also ask did you get anything done fitted eg alarm lights ,to swell the batt then it had to get an unusually high charge in reverse please let me know how you got on

I,ve got a 2008 Ultra classic, and want to change the fluids. It's got 8000 miles, and i dont have a owners manual. the oil, i can figure out , but the trans, and the primary I dont have an idea.


On the bottom of your transmission, there are two drain plugs, one for the transmission and one for the engine oil. The plug in the center is the transmission drain plug and the one toward the left front is the engine oil drain. The primary drain is a small pipe plug that takes a Torx wrench located at the bottom of the primary cover towards the rear of the bike.

Engine oil three quarts with filter. Then start the bike and let it run for a few minutes. Shut down the engine and check the oil level with the dipstick. The dipstick has two marks on it. "Full Cold" and "Full Hot". Fill to the full cold mark.

Transmission takes 20-24 ounces of oil and the primary takes 38-44 ounces of oil. Do not overfill the primary as it will cause your clutch to drag. All three sections take H-D Syn3 20W50 synthetic engine oil.

I've never seen an oil pressure sensor that costs $750...Likely something else was done to justify that cost. If the light has not come on since the repair, I'd assume that problem has been corrected. If not, have the thing checked out again. If they charged you to repair it, then it should be fixed or, it's their problem!!! You should not be afraid to drive your vehicle. It's a machine, therefore it can and will break sometimes as do all cars. But being afraid to use it is not a solution.

Starting and once started won't run


The problem seem to involve a number of circuits, I would suspect the Key switch as it supplies power to all affected systems. The dieing on release of the clutch is usually the kickstand safety switch. If the kick stand is not up, and the bike in gear, then when the clutch switch detects release is kills the engine so you don't kill your self.
Check or replace these switches.
