It sounds like a faulty switch but could also be wear, looseness and play in the shift drum, however if your shifting is normal it is likley the switch.

The trans is toast and needs rebuilt.
It could be an electronic valve assembly problem like in my sisters that I fixed but I also had her entire trans rebuilt because other things were old and junk in there and would fail down the road.
Take it to a qualified REPUTABLE trans shop and have them pull and rebuild. Read reviews on google first to find out if they are good or evil :)
Have you retrained the gear? From memory think goes motor running foot firmly on brake park to neutral three times, neutral to reserve three times, neutral to drive three times, keep going thru all gears Then drive car normal for ten minutes minium as you usually would.
Try putting the transmission in neutral first then shift the 4wd switch to 4 hi.then try shifting normally.If the light on the 4wd is flashing there is a code in the 4wd system and you will need to get the code.Sometimes the encoder motor will gets week and will not be able to switch gears.
check see if these helps if its not shifting automatic right?tap the brake a few times maybe like 10 or more pay atention if you hear a little thump it means its unlocked those cars have a small piece that goes bad if you dont get it replaced is gonna do the same thing better to get it changed its actually cheap
Neutral safety switch may be going bad or is out of adjustment. Switch is on the transmission under the shift linkage ear where shift cable attaches. Loosen it and put car in reverse (not running) turn switch so that reverse lights come on. semi-tighten switch and check that it starts in both park and neutral. If not you need to change the switch.
