If the bike is fuel injected- the pump is in the fuel tank.. if the bike has carburetors- there is normally no fuel pump- the fuel gravity feeds from the tank thru the petcock valve into the carbs

There is no fuel pump on a VStar 1100. The carbs are gravity fed from the gas tank above. Opening the fuel petcock will provide a steady flow of gas.

SOURCE: 1100 yamaha 2003 vstar classic gas tank remove

1) Make sure your fuel petcock is closed, then detach the gas line coming off it (left underside of tank)
2) Remove the back seat (single acorn nut on rear fender)
3) Remove the front seat (two allen bolts at the back of seat)
4) There are two metric 12mm bolts under the front seat that hold the tank down. Remove them. The tank should be sitting loose on bike, but connected by some wires
5) Disconnect the white wiring harness under the bike. Tank is now totally free to remove.
6) Pull tank up and back at the same time, it will slide off the two rubber mounts at the front.

SOURCE: NOISY FUEL PUMP ON 650 YAMAHA VSTAR (2002)

your fuel pump suppose to Hum and gently vibrate only when working normally, clacking sound would only mean that it is having a hard time or inconsistently supplying gasoline into your engine. Have it checked and see if any improvement would happen.

SOURCE: Why does my Yamaha 1100 Vstar die when you put it

There is a switch on the kickstand that is supposed to shut the motor off if the kickstand is left down and the bike is put in gear. It's a safety device that's a bit annoying - especially when it malfunctions. My guess is that this switch is electrically or mechanically stuck so it thinks the kickstand is down. It's a fairly common problem. Mess with the plunger a little - it might free up but ultimately you might just want to replace the switch if it is in fact the switch causing the problem. I hope this helped!

Sounds like it may be drawing air around the intake somewhere. Let it idle and spray around carefully with wd-40 until it speeds up. This will reveal the leak.
