My clutch seems to slip in higher gears on my suzuki intruder but takes off from dead starts just fine. what does it sound like the problem is?

Sounds like you either need to adjust the clutch cable - there should be a little bit of play in it before it disengages the clutch - or you need a new clutch kit (plates, springs, etc). What mileage is on the bike and has the clutch ever been changed?

One the left-hand side of the bike (facing forward), there is cover plate just ahead of the drive shaft. Remove that cover (mine has 8mm bolts). The bleeder valve is under this cover. Go to an auto parts store and get a "one man bleeder kit" or if you have some plastic tubing that will fit over the valve, you can use that and a clean jar. Follow the instructions on the bleeder kit, or if you're using the jar and tubing, fill the jar about a quarter of the way with break fluid (use DOT4, but never DOT5!). Take the cover off the master cylinder up at the handlebars, place the tube over the end of the bleed valve (after loosening it a turn or two. Place the other end of the tube down in the break fluid in the jar. Work the clutch lever until you stop getting bubbles in the jar. Be sure to keep the fluid level up in the reservoir. Tighten the bleeder valve, remove the tubing, top off the fluid and replace the covers.

Be careful not to get brake fluid on anything. It will eat paint and mess up other things.

No adjusting is possible.
Slip can be caused by several defaults:
- Wrong engine oil ( SAE 10w-40 API SE or SF only )
- Weak clutch springs ( free spring length : 34mm ( 1.34in ) MINIMUM
- Worn clutch disk 2(internal teeths ) ( wear limit 3.15mm ( 0.124in ) ) This is the last disk, against the clutch center
- Worn clutch disks 1 (internal teeths) ( wear limit 2.62mm ( 0.103in ) )
- Clutch plates ( thikcness between 1.55 and 1.65mm / 0.0610 and 0.0649 inches
- Damaged pressure plate ( cracks round the spring holes )

To check the clutch parts, the right engine cover must be removed.
Take attention while loosening the clutch spring bolts!
Drain engine oil, and set engine into first gear ( this locks the clutch for an easy loosening of the spring bolts )

SOURCE: battery does not hold charge new battery fitted

Sounds like a charging issue. First check all wires and make sure they are clean and making good contact, then check for proper voltage at the battery. I ride a harly so I don't know the exact voltage to look for but it most likly is around 13V at the battery if it isn't you need to look at your voltage regulator and stator.

It's most likely the connection to the battery. The screws dont tighten in well and you get the famous clicking....I replaced the stock philips screws with a hex bolt and after two years of trying to solve the problen have been starting everytime for the past year no problems. Another gie away is the intermitant starting problem gets worse when wet.

Suzuki Intruder VS400 with UK 'R reg'. It starts every time but soon as you put it in gear to take off it cuts out.

The most likely thing is a sticking clutch. With the ignition off, can you drop it into second gear and push it with the clutch pulled in? You say you put 'new petrol' in, so it sounds like it has been stored for a while. Clutches will often stick as the clutch plates have been under pressure for so long. Fully warm the engine before moving off until the plates free up.

And it looks like you probably mean VS1400 not VS400!

Clutch slipping

can you get it out of gear?
can you change gear
does the clutch drag ( shifts are difficult )
the clutch plates are froze/ stuck together, remove clutch, check plates for rust clean soak in fresh oil replace any that are rusty..

I have a 96 Suzuki Intruder 1400. The problem is that sometimes I cannot downshift from 2nd gear thru neutral to 1st. It hangs up before going thru neutral to 1st. I have bled the system and it seemed...

bike is 15yrs-ajust clutch 1st-if no relief then a bottom end will have to be done and u need a clymer manual and special tools--the book covers complete maintenance

Can't get the clutch on a suzuki 800 intruder to hold pressure

Oil should be 10W40 SF or SG grade. Anything else will cause the clutch to slip. There must be freeplay on the clutch cable (0.4-0.6in). Adjust handle bar clutch lever screw all the way out then adjust at gearbox end and revert to handle bar adjustment for fine adjustments. If this does not solve the problem take the clutch apart and measure driven plate thickness (3.12in minimum for the 1st plate and 2.62in minimum for the others)
Measure clutch spring free length. There are 2 sets (4 springs each). 0.97in minimum and 0.92in minimum respectively.
A slipping clutch is caused by incorrect friction, that is incorrect oil or insufficient pressure. Pressure is supplied by the springs on the discs and driven plates.
If the discs, driven plates or bucket is worn it will cause slippage.
If you pull in the clutch and it disengages but starts to re- engage after a short period you will need to replace the clutch master cylinder seals.

All gears from 1 to 5 are slipping. each gear

does the clutch lever release "sharply" and snap back after engagement? then lean bike over drain about a quart of oil, take off access cover to clutch and check to see if you have any broken clutch springs. if thats looks o.k. you"ll probably need new clutch plates. a real quick check when you ride the bike smell the oil, does it smell burnt? if it does, the plates are probably no good.
