Gear Lube leaking from Prop

I have a slow oil drip coming from the propel blade on my 30 HP Yamaha outboard. Is this normal if the boat has been sitting for a month? Or is a seal cracked somewhere, that I can fix?

Gear-oil smells like rotten egg. 2-stroke smells like gasoline. If you smell gear-oil it is time to change the seals in the gearbox. If it is 2-stroke don't worry it is normal if your oil to fuel mixture is a bit rich.

Keep an eye on it and put a bucket with paper inside under the motor. You want to know whether the oil is burnt oil from the exhaust or gear lube. You should be able to tell from the color of the oil. Its kind of like soot in a chimney, the exhaust goes through the prop with the oil you added to the gas.

Boatmotor johnson tracker 90hp

If it shifts into gear and functions ok until you start to accelerate then revs up without going anywhere it is most likely the hub in the propeller. If so try another prop or have a prop shop rehub yours.

If it is the gear case jumping out of gear usually it is a more abrupt event, feels like you hit something. Also check the gear lube by tilting the motor down and unscrewing the drain screw from the gear case. Let a couple of drops come out. Should be clean oil, if old it will be black and have a strong odor. It should not have any water or metal filings in it. If milky there is water mixed with the oil.

I have a johnson 50 hp outboard when travelling in excess of 5 knots the prop stops turning and motor revs high.

In the hub of the propeller is a rubber bush that stops damage to the shafts and g/box if something is struck with the prop. These bushes do give way and are repairable.See your local boat shop or look for a specialist propeller shop.Probably the latter as the boat shops sends the props to them anyway. Its called the propeller hub bush or just the prop bush.Just take the prop into them and all will be good.Hope this helps you

I have a johnson outboard motor that drips oil from the prop.why is this ?,maybe a seal is blown?

Yes the prop shaft seal needs to be replaced.Do this sooner than later as water will get into the lower g/box.Sometimes they wear out or fishing line is a bad culprit. Its not a big job but it really needs to be done. The oil will also need replacing.Hope this helps

Help. recently cavitated my 140 hp 1989 mercury outboard motor at high speed.I Removed the lower unit several times but only goes in forward about 5mph. Please help Tx jack

Not really sure what is wrong.Do all the gears work?Does the motor rev properly.Did you change the height of the motor. If the motor etc. are all ok and the motor cavitated at high speed, you may have spun the bush in the propeller hub.The symtoms are, everything works ok but the boat can rev but will have very little forward propulsion. If this is it,the prop needs to come off and taken to be rebushed. The bush stops major damage to the g/box if the prop strikes something.Hope this helps
