It does not close the fuel intake in the carb, it is the valve with rubber on top of valve, this valve is attach to float. When this rubber is dirty or worn it doesn't close the fuel when the float is at max, so the fuel goes out through upper rubber pipe.

SOURCE: 1984 VT 500 C Shadow: 1983 honda shadow -starts and runs, seems to miss ...

The fuel filter is in the tank on the petcock and is self cleaning. I suspect you have bad spark plug caps on your bike the cap is part of the wire. If you remove the wire and take a reading with an ohm meter, the cap should read 5000 ohms . Anything above or below and you should replace the cap. This is probably causing the slight miss.

SOURCE: 1983 Honda Shadow VT750 Motorcycle,

If your bike has been in storage for the winter you may have fuel that has gone bad. Even if you had stabilizer in it. The Fuel pump could be the problem, but it would not be my first guess. The carb is the first and most likely location for the issues. The jets are very small and clog very easy. You may need a rebuild kit. You could try cleaning the carb again. Use guitar string through all of the tiny ports on the jets. Also the petcock may have become clogged. Also check the fuel lines they could dry rot and cause issues.

SOURCE: 1983 vt 500 honda shadow. Replaced

Three things that can cause popping or backfiring. 1)You may have cracked, leaking,or broken intake manifolds or bad o-rings on the manifolds. 2)Leaking exhaust gaskets in the head or between the head pipe and muffler. 3)Bad spark plug caps and partially fouled plugs. Check it out.

I have a 1986 honda shadow 500 vt,and im leaking fuel out of the passenger side overflow tube comin from the passenger side carburator. can anyone give me any ideas why this is happening?

Check to see the float inside that carb is not all gummed up. This happens if you don't use fuel stabilizer. You should remove and clean.

1983 honda shadow vt500c Fowles plugs every 5 to 700 miles

If the plugs are fuel fouled then you should look at the carbs.sounds like running ritch. If carbs are OK then Check spark if it is orange it is week(should be whiteish blue). If the coils are producing spark but week the bike will run but eventualy foul the plugs because it can't burn all the fuel.

I have 1983 Honda Shadow VT500c . It seems to be very cold and slow warming up before you can get it to rev up without shutting down. Any ideas?

hondas of that vintage DO like their choke on until warm, check condition of air filter, check for air leak at carb intake connections.
