Timing chains usually have chain tensioners that can be adjusted with out taking apart the front engine covers to access the chain itself. Lok at a for manual for this adjustment.

SOURCE: i need to tighten my chain

Look at the rear axle. There should be marks on both sides indicating where the axle is in relation to the swingarm. Note the position of the axle, then loosen the axle. There MAY be chain adjusters at the back end of the swingarm, but not all bikes have those. If yours does, as you look at the swingarm from the rear of the bike you will see two adjustment bolts. Tighten those up, and make sure you keep the axle position indicators the same on both sides. Your chain should have 1-2 inches of slack as you lift and press down on the middle of the longest run of the chain. Often there is a sticker on the swingarm that tells you how much slack is acceptable, do as the sticker says if it is there.

2004 Honda CRF 230 F how much slack should the timing chain have

There should be no slack!, add tension until there is no noise when hot, or no play when loose. Do not over tighten it. with manual tension-er once it stops back it up and tighten the jam nut

Transfer case noise

wow eral vague stuff to work with.. do you plow?? off road? or did truck used to do this.... basicaly u got input shaft from ****** .thru clutch pack to gear, output to rear drive . gear linked to front gear by chain. chain will strech over time and slap inside case if bad enuff . but will sound like clunk if just worn when you engage it .parts are availible but cheaper and faster to get low mileage one from wreckers and change out .

I just changed my oil in my 98 ford explorer and now i can hear a ticking sound coming for the passager side of the truck what could it be?

I asked because I had a suspension this was a 4.0 SOHC, have you had the recall done addresses the noise, it is caused inmost cases by leaking hydraulic cam chain automatic tensioners, they were recalled back in late 98, it is a free repair if it hasn't been done already. they are easy to change out. To find out if you need the recall visit your Ford dealer and have them run your VIN. I would also never use anything but the recommended oil. I double checked and your truck requires 5W-30W oil (not 5W-20W, my mistake), in this engine due to the way the hydraulic cam chain tensioners work I would not use 10W-30W, the thicker oil can cause slack in the cam chains and cause you the noise you discribed. I am 99% sure you have noise from a slack timing chain based on my 20 years at the Ford dealer.

Ticking noise at front of motor. I've been told it

Could be somethin with the timing chain. What engine is in your mustang? Is it OHV or OHC? If its ohv then you could have a lifter tapping.

Timing chain has a lot of slack and is rubbing against internal case. question can existing chain be tightened or must be replaced completely

The timing chain keeps the major componants in the engine alligned. A new chain will allign the engine componants better than an old chain that is sagging... and will thusly make the engine perform better and get better fuel milage as well as last longer.

I would replace the chain and not even consider the tightening of a chain that is that worn out...

You are lucky not to have the chain skip and cause the valves to come into contact with the pistons... ( read ; Interference engine)
