First record the rpm when the vibration occurs. Then while in park rev the engine to this rpm to see if it is there. If not then the engine should be ok. Next when on the highwaqy and the vibrations starts, put the transmission in neutral and see if it goes away. If so the go faster than when it starts and then put it in N and let the speed back down to 45 and see if it starts again. If it does then you may have a tire balance problem. If it happens while accelerating to 45 and goes away when letting off the gas it may be the u-joints.
Ok, the Dyna series bikes have rubber mounted engines but the mounts have a tendency to only absorb the higher frequency vibrations. When the engine is idling or running at RPM's lower than about 2000, you can feel the engine vibrations. I have a 1994 FXDWG and it does the same thing. This is normal for all engines with rubber motor mounts. However, since the bike has quite a number of years on it, it would be a good idea to check the mounts and the stabilizers to see if they might need replacement.
You can check for a loose or broken motor mount but you need to consider how the rubber mounts work. The mounts absorb high frequency vibrations. Low frequency vibrations will be felt throughout the machine.
On most Dyna's, the bike vibrates when idling. When accelerating though the gears (and decelerating back down) if the engine rpm's gets below about 2000 rpm's, you'll feel the vibration. Once above this level, the bike smooths out due to the change in frequency of the vibrations. I have owned a '94 FXDWG since new and this is my experience with the bike.
However, if the vibration is very bad, you may need to have it looked at by a technician. You'll have to determine that for yourself.
Hi .... This may sound daft but have you recently changed or had the exhaust off ? Have a look at the silencer/muffler rear mounts, difficult to explain but they should be in a 'neutral' position, not fully pushed in. Maybe the vibes are coming straight along the pipes from the engine and through the footpegs.
Let me know how you get on.
have been religious about break-in and will pass 500 miles by the end of the day.
I’m getting about 14mpg less in urban and 20mpg less in highway than EPA estimates. I generally cruse between 2200 and 3800 RPM rev once when taking off from a stop and rev at each downshift when stopping. These are lifelong habits and have serious doubts that my engine’s drinking problem is substantially related. Does anyone have an isea why my bike is 34% less fuel efficient than Buell advertises?,I just picked up a '08 XB12R at the start of the season, and was getting really bad mpg the first 1k miles also. I just hit 3.6k miles and am getting about 130 miles to the tank riding hard. Id say give it till 1k-1.5k miles before giving it much worry, during the break in period its going to be low.,,,
