Not sure of what kind of lights you used, aside from the possibility you upset some existing wires, if you used lights that are drawing a lot of power, they may be taxing your system too much. Check to be sure where you hooked these up to power, you may have created a loop. Lights are best if they go directly to the battery with a relay to switch them on and off with the accessory.

Hi Ron, I would check the clutch interface switch at the clutch lever it sounds as if it is either faulty, broken, come loose or stuck. Some bikes have loads of problems with this beastie. Pull in the clutch lever then try spraying some lube between the lever and the stock and see if you can see the switch plunger move. You might have to remove the clutch lever completely to see this if you do then you should be able to push the plunger in by finger and see it spring back out. The whole switch does in some cases come loose if you look for 2 wires going into the clutch lever stock see it the thing they go into is loose or pushed out, normally they just push back with a slight click. When you operate the clutch lever the switch plunger should move out allowing the bike to start in gear. On my Suzuki you have to operate the clutch lever to start even in neutral. Hope this helps

SOURCE: 1990 Honda Goldwing GL1500 lights go off when put in gear.

We had the same thing tonite. thanx to the guy that pointed us in the right direction.
More specificly, if you remove the seat, you will find two black plastic boxes, one on each side. they hold a 30-40 pin connector. the one on the left side (as you are sitting on it) we found one burned connection in the corner of the plug. a green wire. we cut the wire off both sides of the plugs & made a jumper (bypassed the plug) works good, even the cruise works now too.
hope this helps. now we can relax & have some beers EH!!

IIRC, there is a tipover sensor on that bike. Read the manual, and reset it . See if that helps. (No, it does not need to be completely tipped over.)

When it is cold out you will need to use the choke more to get them to start. This is normal on almost all carberated bike's. Also crack the throtle just a bit with the choke on when starting.

sounds like could possibly be a ground problem with the wiring.. check for a broken wire or possibily corroded connection

Hello James
Hearing your problem strikes right at me. My old Jeep Cherokee had the same problem. You have two possible problems, alternator and regulator. Luckily for you, both can be taken to any good sized auto parts store and tested for free:) The reason it dies is that the bike uses electricity to generate sparks at the spark plugs, if you don't have something to resupply the battery(ie:alternator) then it will slowly die(also causing the lights to dim more and more). The alternator could not be charging the battery, or the regulator could be not allowing the alternator to charge the battery.Taking the out could become quite difficult, my GoldWing makes it extremely hard, but the rest of the job should be easy.

Hope this helps
-Chris
