Why wont my 2002 jetta 2.0 wont shift properly???between 1st and 2nd, 2nd and 3rd...

My vw 4 speed automatic 2.0 115hp jetta gls is having trouble shifting. It takes a lot more rpm before it wil shift between 1 and 2 , then 2nd and 3rd. it wont even go into 4th... Are these transmissions sealed? I cant even find a dipstick or any info on it...

    Just to make this clear... its not the alternator... I just happened to click on the wrong product choice. Its my transmission that is at issue.!!!

    Im wondering if this has something to do with the "driver memory" feature that this car has, Ive read about how the computer keeps track of driving habits and adjusts accordingly, The issue went away after about a week and hasnt been a problem since. I was thinking that maybe by disconnecting the battery for a bit might cause the computer to ' forget' and reset . ????

The Pacifica will not shift past 4th gear. It shifts normally through 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th gear. Their is no high reeving RPS, no clunking, no lurching. It will just not shift past 4th gear.

Probably a shift solinoid in the gear box. My commodore has 2 (1st & 2nd) & (3rd & 4th) my 3 / 4 solinoid went so went 1st 2nd 3rd but not to 4th until I replaced it.

I've got a 2001 VW Jetta GLS with 108k miles. Recently I've noticed that the ****** isn't shifting from 2nd to 3rd but only when engine temp is below 190.
shifting solenoid - either they work or do not,. otherwise look closely at the wires going into and inside the transmission

Engine misses at idle and after shifting (Jetta 97)
Did you by chance check the resistance of your plug wires? They have a tendency of breaking down over a period of time and need replaced. The spark plugs would have told you what was wrong with the engine many times.
