Question about 1983 Honda vt 500 ft ascot
I found your page on the net, and thought I would see if you could possibly help me. I have a VT500 Ascot over here in the UK, where the roads are salty in winter. As is common with Honda square-section swingarms, the rust has got at the underside, so that I need to pull it out to get it welded stronger.
I have everything off the swingarm and the pivot bolts are removed so that the arm is (almost) free, but I cannot get sufficient clearance between the seal on the left side of the swing arm outside the bearing, and the frame, to be able to pull the swing arm straight back out of the frame. Also I cannot clearly see if there is anything under the rubber boot that covers the universal joint that might prevent it sliding off the output shaft from the back of the gearbox.
I am wondering if I have to remove the engine mount bolts to twist the engine enough to get the swing arm to clear the frame?
Any help you can give would be appreciated.
Hi I also have a VT500FT (and a VT500EF) in England. I don't know the answer to this particular question. But I got a workshop manual via ebay and have sourced parts from the US from ebay with success. Good luck and try to stick with it its worth it. But if you decide to get rid call me on 07932640071. I know this is an old post, but figured it might help someone else out. I recently had to remove the swing arm on my Shadow 1100 and had the same clearance issue. The solution was simple; I had to remove the final drive, releasing the drive shaft from the universal joint. The final drive was held on by four bolts. May vary on different models. Once removed, the swing arm slipped right out. Just be sure to grease the gears and parts during re-assembly. Best!
