Question about 2005 Honda VTX 1300 S

1 Answer

I have a 2005 vtx 1300. It appears the front cylinder is not firing properly. It has spark.

The front cylinder doesn't seems to be firing all the time. I removed a plug and it was firing. If I am going 55 and grab some throttle it takes forever to reach 60. Last year it responded like right now.

SOURCE: I have a 2005 vtx 1300 and it really back fires

Hi TJ,
There are a lot things tht may cause backfiring.
It could be due to the timing being incorrect.
It can also be due to the gas having water in it.
When did you start facing this problem?,suddenly, or after some reapirs or was the bike stored for a longtime ?

great news you can only win with this. i bet if you pull a spark plug and look at it, it will be white or close to it. if so your motor is lean, it's not get the right amount of gas. when you put pipes on a bike it lets more air flow and you need to jet your carb. you local bike shop can help you get a jet kit and handle the install if needed. when done right you get more performance out of it. while you are look into jets get a high flow air filter or look into a hyper charger they come a jet kit, k&n air filter and the air scoop price isn't bad

You may have an air leak (extra air getting in) between the carbs & the engine. Inlet manifold rubbers do crack on Hondas but Yamahas are the worst.
Check for cracks, check the o rings (each end of inlet manifold) & check for leaks from air-box to carbs
Carbs need to be balanced (synchronised) to let the engine run smoothly but will not produce those symptoms if left unbalanced.
You should also check the HT leads & spark plug caps for shorting, run the bike in the dark & look for sparks going to earth (sometimes you can only hear a ticking as the spark jumps across). Make sure the leads are not touching anything during this procedure

Ride safe

An internal combustion engine requires (3) three things to run(assuming all the internals are good).:

1. A properly timed spark
2. Adequate compression
3. Proper fuel/air ratio

Start eliminating one at a time, until you find the one that is missing...then you have diagnosed your problem. This is how a professional diagnoses a problem.

No spark to rear cylinders runs good and then runs on one cylinder 1986 honda shadow 1100

try switching the position of the two coils, the plug wires will unscrew off of the coils and that way you dont have to pull the spark plug wires too,(be sure and change the 2 wire couplers too) if your front cylinder stops firing you know its the coil, if the back cylinder still doesn't fire then your coil is good and you either have a bad #2 spark unit or a bad crank pulse generator.

The 120° advanced reading may indeed be correct. Here's why. Your bike is equipped with a "dual fire" ignition system which means both spark plugs fire at the same time every time a piston comes to top center. This creates a "wasted spark" as one spark plug is firing on a cylinder that is on the exhaust stroke. Since a Harley engine is a twin cylinder engine that uses only a single crankpin, the pistons are on a cycle that is not exactly 180° apart like in most engines. If I had to take a guess at your problem, I'd say that your fuel air mixture is too lean either due to improper setup or you have a vacuum leak. If your bike is equipped with a carburetor, check to make sure the accelerator pump is working like it should. Take the air filter off so that you can see into the carb. With the engine OFF, crank the throttle to wide open position while watching the brass nozzle just inside the carb opening. It should spray a squirt of fuel into the carb. If it doesn't, you need to replace the diaphragm in the accelerator pump in the float bowl of the carb.

Good Luck

The reason I'm checking the timing belt is that there is mis-fire in 1 & 2 cylinder. If the firing order is 1,2,3,4. I have continues fire out of 1 & 2, when plug wires are pulled out of head. 3...

unplug the fuel injectors, check the olhms on all. the readings should all be the same, around 11-11.5 olhms. Any readings that are higher is a sign of a bad injector which is what your problems sounds like., putting to much fuel to a cylinder causing different fuel amounts to each cylinder and causing it to backfire out of the throttle body , excess fuel . Also remove the throttle body and clean with cleaner and a toothbrush after replacing any injectors. Or there's a simpler answer and that the cambshaft is worn-out/round causing the lifters not to open enough to let in all the fuel. A worn belt would not cause misfires only on select cylinders but rather jump timing, slipping a notch on a gear and possibly bending a valve or valves and this cause a loud clacking or a really a sign to quit running the motor because it's broke! Good luck.

Truck not firing properly front coil pack not firing at all.

if this truck has an o2 sensor i would replace that and also make sure the cat-converter is not plugged, this would give you your powerloss and egr code, next is your coil, this may be caused by the computer or your crank sensor, look at the tone ring that the crank sensor uses and make sure its not missing teeth or broken, also check all your fuses.

To me it sounds like the coil is breaking down and not working at higher RPM's. You can take them off and have them tested at a service shop.
