You will find using a premium fuel or an additive will rectify this is over time. If using standard Unleaded fuel will dry out the valves making this noise. Noise is more noticable after using Ethanol / Blended fuels.

Rattle in third gear is this a common fault

LorraineA25,

PLEASE contact me. I have a '06 Stratoliner S here in Woodbridge, VA. Yamaha is currently taking my engine APART to figure this out. They are MUM on this issue but there are dozens of complaints about this according to a few online bike forums. Call Yamaha Motor USA and tell them you have this problem and want it fixed!

I'm tired of bike manufacturers not acknowledging their fudge ups! Many others are having the same issue:

06 Roadliner sparkplug

Below the tank there should be about 4 bolts holding the tank to the frame, loosen then and lift the tank enough from seat side, you should be able to access the wiring and plugs.

Drain plugs

Under the crank case. Just take a small mirror & watch the bottom of the crankcase. You can locate the hexagon bolt in the reflection view.

Sounds like the timing belt tensioner. I have that problem. Rattles at low rpm, goes away as you acceralerate. Looking to have timing belts changed and tensioners replaced.
