I have a 1987 yamaha virago 535, i bought it after it sat for a year and i had the carbs cleaned and now she runs good just backfires alot when riding or just revving the engine, and for some reason the previous owner had put different pipes on it that have no back pressure and one pipe is smaller then the other, what do i do to stop the back firing and popping

SOURCE: 2007 650 yamaha vstar popping through the rear cylinder exhaust

First off did you buy it new? Second has it gone through its break in tune up yet?Did you do the re jeting? My guess is it was re jeted wrong & neeeds to be re jeted again or could also need more air(upgraded air kit) or a tfi or power comand fuel mod.My bike also poped untill I did the air & fuel upgrades & them upgrades will also give you a much needed house power needed for this rig.

Bring it to a shop & have it looked at.......

Good luck

If it is possible to start at all. Fresh fuel fresh engine oil good battery. You may have the following problems; Corroded and blocked carburetor fuel system, bad wire connections piston ring set up.... I hope it was kept indoors and the fuel was drained out before it was left sitting. Good luck, they are nice bikes.

the pilot jet is too only make the bike idle so it wouldnt be this is the engine have lots of oil in the engine

Testimonial: "I haven't thought of that but I will put a little more oil in it and try it again. Will let you know the results later. Thanks"

Either way too lean, or air intake leak, or the cam timing is out.
Does it help with the choke on?

Not certain of the timing on that model, but at top dead centre there should be some marks on the cam sprockets that will line up with the rocker gasket surface. The previous owner may have changed the timing by a tooth or two to try for more performance .

Check valve adjustment. And...one might be sticking.

Virago 535 not starting

Sounds like:
A: The starter clutch is slipping and not letting the starter engage the crankshaft
B. The carbs need to be cleaned. If ti has sat unused for more than 30 days, the pilot jets are clogged up causing it to stall (off choke) and be sluggish on acceleration off idle.

I installed a new battery in my 1987 535 Virago. When I turn on the key, nothing comes on. I have no power. The bike sat for 3 years. Any ideas?

Have you checked the main fuse from the positive terminal to the wire harness? I'ts contained in a white long clamshell type enclosure.
